high window dressing conundrum

I have four windows in our nursery, one 70”, one 50” and two 35X22” way up near the 12’ mark. I want my dressings for the high, small windows to be motorized but haven’t found great affordable options to match what I want to do for the other windows (one Roman shade and one set of curtains). Is it too chaotic to have three types of window dressings in one room??

Mildly considering a wide-pleat cellular shade (see photo) for all, plus the one pair of curtains.

I don’t think I want curtains behind the daybed otherwise I’d dress both lower windows with those. Lmk your thoughts, thank you!

I would do motorized solar shades on the top windows . In fact I probably would not even motorize them at all . The do the othr window with drapes on both or non string roman shades for both

I love Solera Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas. I have them in all three of my kids rooms. They can be cordless, and they offer energy efficiency. The benefit is that the shape of the pleats will just pop back into position if they are fussed with. My older boys spent their young childhoods abusing the shades, and they still look beautiful. LOL. I don't think you have to do motorized–I would leave the high window shades closed. You have so many other lighting options from the other windows. And yes, I love the idea of adding curtains to the lower ones.

You could remodel that hearth and do away with the part near the window :) I like the idea of hanging the panel on the left side of the window and just living with the weird drape over the mantel when they are closed. But I think I would put up a ceiling height valence and do wood blinds. You can change the fabric of the valence as you wish to change the look and the wood blinds are gorgeous and give a room a nice feeling.if you are worried about the height of the blinds then do the top up/down honeycomb ones in a similar color to the walls to make them visually smaller. The window will still be the star of the show and the valence will be the supporting cast that draws the eye.

I agree with laurafhallen. I don't believe the upper windows were intended to be covered, but to simply let light into the space. I would leave them uncovered and add simple plantation shutters to the lower windows, keeping the lines clean and crisp.

Are you also pretty isolated? I am thinking the previous owners wanted some color in the room so added the scarves. They aren't privacy or light needed. I would probably go with out any sort of decorative "treatment". If you have light or privacy issues shades would make more sense.

Well, if that's what solar shades do, (and I haven't seen them in person), then I don't think I would like them either, but you probably do face a direction where the sun shines pretty hard through those windows. Personally, I like the mechanized blinds. How else to provide light control in those top windows? I suppose you could have floor to ceiling curtains (mechanized), but I can't even imagine what that might cost. Here's what I would do: 1. I would install high quality window film on all those windows, just to screen out the UV rays and the glare. How else to protect your furniture and flooring if the blinds are usually up? 2. I would keep the mechanized blinds you have. I'm sure when they're "up" they're unobtrusive, and the white color blends with the trim. Plus, they're already paid for and functional. 3. I might do curtains, but not planning to draw them across the windows too often. I don't think you'd need to, with window film and the blinds. I'd probably do curtains/drapes just on the lower windows, with one bar across all three panes, with the bar mounted half-way to 3/4 of the way up between the lower and upper panes.

So, if you want to motorize, you will need a rechargeable battery option. These motors need a recharge every 6 to 9 months depending on usage. You would not need to replace the battery, just plug in a cord overnight and you are good to go for another few months. I would motorize the top windows with bottom-up motorized shades and use the same fabric but in bottom-up top-down operation for the lower windows. No pull strings nor cords across the glass are attached to this system and keeps your child out of harm's way.
