Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Relocate kitchen to lounge and make open plan living

We recently moved into a 3 bed house flat roof house and we would like to move the kitchen into the lounge and create an open plan kitchen dinner, changing the current kitchen into a quiet space lounge.

I am finding it hard to redesign the floor plan to optimise the space and create a nice kitchen diner for family living. We would like a island and breakfast bar.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your intent is to leave the current kitchen space with the door to create a quiet space? I'd delete the corridor door. I'd move the kitchen door to the corner next to the corridor. This gives you a length of wall that can be combined with the adjacent wall for an 'L' kitchen. Add an island all one level with seating. No need for a separate breakfast bar. You then have the rest of the Lounge area for a round expandable table and chairs. You can have lounge seating depending on what types of windows and view the end of the lounge has. Maybe a couch with a chaise end and large ottoman. If you need more kitchen put the quiet room door so it opens inward off the corridor. You can even make that door a pocket door. Need more kitchen space? A frig can go under the stairs. A floorplan with more measurements that enlarges when clicked on could help.

I rather like the color of your walls. I think they look very nice with the grey sofa and carpeting. All the other colors that come to mind, the soft blues or greens, even yellows, do not suit grey as well. I think your lounge could use a nice area rug with more color though. And perhaps something colorful on the wall in between the arm chair and the television? There are people here who are very talented with paint. I am not one of them, so perhaps I have missed something obvious and another person will offer better painting advice. In the meantime, you have a lovely room.

Consider a privacy film for the door-the curtains take away from the pretty doors. I agree that the curtains are too stark. They're also too short and not full enough. If the curtains are 84", try 96" instead. Try to find something closer to the wall color. The gray, white and navy are a bit blah. Is there a color you like that you can add in with different pillows and a throw as suggested? I also agree that the coffee table is not quite right. I'd consider a round ottoman, maybe in leather, that you can add a tray to for drinks and a bit of decor. What is the distance inside the U shape? You could add a pretty demilune shaped table next to the door to ground the artwork. @Vinnya DeLuca - the entry to the great room is through a 8-foot wide cased (actually, steel beam-framed) opening near the kitchen. There is a hallway parallel to the length to our guest room area, but wanted those to be private, so only one entry to the great room. The entry is across from the main entry to our house, through the foyer. And thanks. That mockup/render was an early attempt to see if I properly framed the view the way i wanted. We have enough framing up to know that I nailed it!

Do you have any budget for replacing some pieces? Are you allowed to paint? The room is so dark--one window, dark floor, dark cabinets, and way too much dark furniture. The gray is so gloomy with all that dark furniture. That room needs warm white walls that coordinate with the cabinets. I suggest the following: --Move your living room furniture towards the kitchen area with the upholstered chair facing the window and front door. --Get a small round dining table and put it at the window. Imagine this only minus the banquette. Putting your table there utilizes that space. Drop a clear pendant over the table to let maximun light show through. Ikea has very affordable white tulip tables. Get comfortable, padded dining chairs that can be pulled into the living room. Yep, it means walking from the kitchen a ways with dishes, but that space is wasted right now. A dining table in front of a window is very cozy. --Pull the rug under the sofa so there's a straight, pathway from front door all the way to the back. --Replace massive coffee table with nesting one, up on legs, light top, round shape. This idea: That's all you have room for.

90 sq ft is not very large for lounge area . This will for sure need an interior designer with good kitchen design skills and a good contractor. I am not sure where you live but usually in Britain you will need major permits to change things in homes that are older. If you take a few pictures of the spaces that would also help

Without knowing if those are windows or doors, here's Dan's idea sans island or breakfast bar. I drew the counters extra deep since there is floor space to fill--but not enough space for an island (grey line).

Tha loinge space is 210 = wide so certainly enough space for an island if they want one but iMO a nice table and chairs in that space would be the prctical plan BTW I never like crossing in front of a range to get from fridge to sink and in that space some real pullout pantries would be IMO a grea tchoice
