Woodworking Design Dilemma

Looking for varied depth wood slat wall ideas

Throwing this out as a hail mary ... We have a wall with two different openings for doorways, and are planning on having a local carpenter build us a wood slat wall with hidden doors. What we really want to have him build is a vertically stacked wood wall with thin boards/slats of varying depth - not the alternating, even slat/open space that seems to be most popular.

Problem is that we need to provide the carpenter with specific photos of what we want (he's Amish, so telling him to "google it" is not an option). We're really struggling to find examples, maybe we're just not searching with the right keywords. If anyone has examples, we'd really appreciate it. TIA.

IMO just shiplap in a complicated look and IMO that ship has sailed and sunk . If you know what you want then you draw it for the contractor , it sounds like a compicated idea for no purpose . Post pics of the wall and maybe someone here can come up with another plan, why hidden doors at all. Many ics of hidden door ideas just not exactly what you are thinking You might need to ge get some wood in different thickness to show him exactly in a model .These are 2 that are quite nice ideas and maybe a bit simpler

Something like this? Hi Worthy, though it's true builds in the desert get away with more than average concerning water & moisture intrusion, i've seen more than my fair share of rot over the years on remodels here in the mojave desert. Casey- Thanks for the info. It'd be lovely to not have to rip out all those lath strips. The house is stucco on the exterior, and it's still in good shape with just a few patches needed. What do you mean by "box" house? Do you mean one of the Sears-type kit houses? I've never heard that those were a problem... fill me in! Vivan- there IS no plaster upstairs. There's thin paneling covered with flowerdy wallpaper on the top layer. Below, according to the owner, is wallpaper on top of "slats"-- presumably the lath that is nailed to the studs. My dilemma involves getting a finished, paintable surface to work with on the walls-- what's there is not paintable (rough seams, finish nails would be visible) and could not easily be made so. Also, when I was trying to vary my cabinets, some suggested that I go look at the blog of Miss Mustard Seed. There are others out there as well who give great ideas about taking off a few cabinet doors altogether for some open shelving. I'm considering curtains in some lower cabinets and decorative wire panel inserts in my top cabinets to break up the monotony.

those ceilings are great. This is what you said, I don't want to feel like i'm living in a cottage. If you paint the ceiling white, this is what it will look like. cottage-y. I vote for leaving the wood as is and either painting or staining the beams in EBONY! Do some white walls, black doors,,,,,amazing. Look how good this looks. going over the beams in an ebony gel stain or ebony stain mixed with some black paint, will be a lot easier than priming all the wood and then painting it white, or sanding and refinishing the ceiling. in the bedrooms, maybe to the slats in black and natural wood beams or do the beams in white kind of digging this look too. @Creative Design Cabinetry thanks! That link has some great photos that will be a great starting point for our conversation.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Agreed on shiplap. I've have never been a fan and that is definitely not what we are looking to do. We have reasons for hidden doors and have done them in previous houses, just looking to try new ideas this time. Chevron paneling isn't our style. I do like the concrete panel look, but this wall is adjacent to a poured concrete wall. i'm sure photos would help, butI I don't like to post pictures of my house on the internet (I know, wrong place for that opinion). Thanks for the ideas though!

Really posting a pic of your home on this site is pretty much a must and how would anyone know where the home is unless you post too much personal info on this site . Without pics we work in the dark and can only guess .
