Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/18
Comments (41)Yes, hubs and I used to walk almost every day back when I lived in a walkable neighborhood. And before that I walked by myself all over the place. And I used to walk a lot for work since I worked at an arboretum. Even my friend who is an inveterate walker commented on how unpleasant it was walking in my neighborhood. I love our lot, and there are many lovely homes on lovely lots, but the in-between parts are not very good. I think this is relatively recent as the neighborhood has gone down considerably in the last ten years, along with most neighborhoods in my home town, outside of the lake properties, which have just sky rocketed. Hubs has taken to driving the dog to a big park on the other side of town, known as the more ritzy neighborhood, and even there he saw homeless people camping out. There is a homeless person apparently now living on the steps of our local library, (It has a portico over the unused back entrance) just below the "Keep Off the Steps" sign . . . sigh. We have homeless shelters and people working on this problem, but it doesn't seem to get better, just worse. We are just off of a major freeway interchange which I think is a big part of it. It's not that I am "too good" to be around homeless people, quite the opposite but who knows with the mental illness and drug problems that accompany so many, and also, it is just sad to see but I have tried referring folks to the local services but they never follow through. So its sad and depressing. Ironically, on the flip side, my home is very conveniently located for driving to shopping places and getting on the interstate . . . I think/hope I will be back at the senior center on the treadmill in the not too distant future . . . Edited to add as a side note, we used to have a huge state home for mentally challenged children and adults that was the major employer in our town. We were known for the "State Home." Lots of sadness and problems there too, only certain people could leave of their own volition, along with folks really trying to help in that situation as well. It closed and we've gone to a smaller, non-mandatory model for care, but that leaves folks unable to fit into that situation either on the streets or often in jail or prison, which is right back where we started only worse . . . It's one of the most confounding problems of our time. Of course like most problems it's going to take a multi-pronged approach to solve. My uncle was in intractable alcoholic and it made my grandmother so sad. She gave him just enough money to keep him housed, but it was a constant battle to keep a roof over his head because he would drink away any offering of help in any realm....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/4/2023
Comments (15)Also got food poisoning in NOLA, so I totally understand. We were there for the college football national championship. My friend and I had the same lunch except she got chicken gumbo, and I got seafood, and a few hours later I was vomiting, and it was game day. I made it to the game and drank ginger ale. That would have been horrible to spend that much money and miss the game. Luckily, our seats at the dome were on an aisle and near a bathroom. But I was feeling better by game time than the afternoon and then luckily for the long bus ride home the next day I was OK. But yes, I have an aversion to gumbo now. Also still haven’t done my decorative flowers! This week is supposed to be good weather, so I should be able to go out and get them. I will do the front planter box, hanging baskets, and some general pots for the deck. I did a Pilates reformer small group class yesterday so it was good to be back for that. I need to re-up my private sessions. DH bought me a gift certificate for my birthday, but he bought the group classes vs. privates. With the new studio, she has changed the class offerings, and he doesn’t really know the difference between a class pass and private session. So, I have over 10 class sessions but now 0 private lessons, so I will need to buy another package. He is actually intrigued by the Reformer, so maybe he will use one LOL. But I have to start somehwere with him with basic strength training. He just had his physical and everything is great—cholesterol, A1c, PSA, etc. But yes, after having alcohol more days last week due to travel and my birthday, I am ready for another dry period. We have Peter Frampton tickets at the end of the month, so no need to have any alcohol until then. We picked the rest of our lettuce from the garden since it was getting near the end, so lots of salads this week. I ordered the Oikos protein yogurt with my online shopping order yesterday, so that will be a good afternoon snack. I tracked my food as best I could but it’s a huge educated guess when dining out. Zumba today! Have a good week, everyone!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/10/2023
Comments (18)I felt lousy for over a week, just today feeling pretty much like myself (so far). Tested negative 3x for covid and never had a fever. Just headache, intermittent sort throat, fatigue. This has happened to me for years. I will randomly feel run down, that ”I’m getting sick” feeling without ever getting truly sick with anything diagnosable, usually just for a couple of days. I mentioned it to my PCP a few years ago and some tests were done. All fine. I do tend to run slightly low on B and iron, and when I had long covid a couple of years ago I was borderline low so the dr recommended supplements. I have dropped them since, but I think I'll start again. The iron I have taken is this liquid that tastes like garbage but doesn't bother my stomach. I was getting a little worried about my upcoming trip so figured it couldn’t hurt to add this back into my routine until I leave. Funky, apples are so great right now! I have been having one every day, often with almond butter or as a ”side dish” with my scrambled eggs. I find that they feel more like a treat (and take longer to eat) when I cut them up. Oh, and sometimes sprinkle with cinnamon. My bday is next week and I am already planning a ”good eating week” interrupted briefly by dessert that night when we go out to dinner....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/24/2023
Comments (23)Congratulations everyone on keeping with this! SpringRoz wonderful news! I love the fact that something that you can wholeheartedly do works to your advantage. So glad the doctor is seeing that. That'll show them. ;-) Sue have a wonderful time in Denmark. It has been simply years since I have been back and it is a beautiful place to visit with very interesting people. LegoMom I'll be very interested to hear about your journey with the metabolism makeover. Wouldn't that be great if that works. I am very good at being consistent at my three days of exercise funky. I am not very good at adding weights to it. I hope that if I keep trying weightlifting will become as normal as my other exercises Things have been going well enough I am doing my exercises no matter what but I'm feeling a bit stressed since we accidentally got scammed for a few dollars from a website that we put information in and realize afterwards that it wasn't for the tickets for the wine tasting festival. Yes we are kicking ourselves. Can we say locked card and new card.. :-( So stress level high 20 out of 10. Exercise continuing as regularly scheduled. Probably 8.5 out of 10. Eating probably a 4 out of 10. What did the eating in is those albeit healthier chips and cheesies that I ate over that weekend. I haven't weighed myself and I know that eating those is not so good. Anyway feeling healthy enough at least even with the blip in what I ate. Only one migraine over the weekend so that's a really telling sign that I didn't kill myself too much and the stress/weather isn't killing me right now :-)....See MoreFunkyart
