What kind of joint compound to cover plaster washers in old wall?

We have original plaster walls in our 1915 home, and after some renovations, one wall has a bunch of loose keys. We've successfully used plaster washers to secure it and now need to cover the washers, but I'm reading mixed things on what kind of patching plaster/joint compound to use over the washers to ensure it adheres well to the original plaster.

Anyone have any experience with this and have a suggested brand or product? I know we first need to cover the washers with fiberglass mesh tape, which we have. After that--patching plaster? Old school plaster of paris? Drywall joint compound? Something else entirely? Thanks!

With plaster repair (as with a lot of things related to old houses) there's a variety of opinons. Ive not had much luck with mesh tape and instead used a bonding agent which helps adhere the new plaster to the old (per advice from my plaster guru many yrs ago). Used mostly EZ-Sand 90 for surface skim coat kinds of jobs and Quikrete Bonding Adhesive (Plaster-weld or anything similar) . You didnt ask about cracks or deep repairs down to the lath but for that you would use real old school 2-coat plaster (obtainable from a specialty store, not big box)) with EZ-Sand as the top coat.

Agreed with Debbie - as a non-pro, your best bet is a sandable setting compound. EZ-sand or Durabond, depending on how much you hate sanding :)

If it looks BS, sounds like BS and smells like you know what, then it is. Old three-coat over lath plaster is put on in layers, the under layers (rough and scratch coats) can look a little rough, and they are supposed to be so for good adhesion. If your other walls are smooth then you have finish coat plaster on top, which is usually smooth as as silk. Its smoothness comes from the final polishing. My finish coat plaster is so smooth that little silicate (sand) particles in my unpainted bedroom ceiling will sparkle if the light hits them right. Now the contractor who did this, is he a plasterer, or something else? Did he use real plaster or joint compound? Is the plaster (if that's what it is) over lath or is a skim coat over board? And what is the nature of the roughness or texture: ripples, waves, orange peel or more than that? Also, though this may not be so important for modern plaster mixtures, older ones at least, need to cure and be primed before they can take any paint. Has anybody taken that into account? And yes, you can sand plaster; a big mess (lots of dust), but it can be done. Usually the problem is the other way around; in some areas of the country it is apparently customary to have a "knock-down" finish to plaster, in those cases the patch is often too smooth compared to the remaining walls. "I don't think you can get a nice finish coat directly on top of the bonding agent. At least I had a difficult time, although perhaps a pro would know how. For me, everything slid around too much while you were trying to work it smooth." Sounds like you are not leaving enough material on the wall, possibly using too much water in the mix, and did not allow the bonding agent to dry enough. The layer is about 1/16 to 1.8 inch thick. The mix for skim coating should be about like peanut butter in consistency. This allows it to be pushed out easily but has enough body to be workable. Bonding agents need to set up to tacky before applying the plaster. The water in the plaster will help it soften again and grab. Use of drywall knives also makes covering large areas even more of a chore than it needs to be. A plasterer's trowel makes short work of covering large areas and produces a smooth finish. It takes some practice to barealy raise the leading edge to obtain a good finish. The trowels with the tiny (3/4 inch diameter) handle are not as good as ones with a decent (~1.5 inch) grip diameter.

i just so happen to be redoing a stairwell in a similar age house that also had several layers of wallpaper. i sort of have taken a combined approach. in some places, where the plaster had been partially chunked out and repaired with a foam filling material (no joke) i used my dremel with a diamond bit (critical) and cut large squares out down to the lathe revealing two studs. i then cut a piece of 1/2" drywall to fit the section. the stairway is in half-floor sections with landing. the portion i'm dealing with has stairs above it. i had two major plaster cracks in the 'ceiling' section (under the stairs above). one of these i secured with plaster washers to great effect...but yes, expect at least 3 coats of compound to smooth it. now one other section i attempted with plaster washers but just couldn't get what i wanted. there i did glue and screw drywall overtop. overall i'm pretty pleased with how things are going. "gluing and screwing" drywall is without a doubt less work, but plaster is such a great material i like to keep it when i can.

Veneer plaster is made for skim coating. Mix it with 90 minute compound mix -- 3 parts compound to 1 part plaster. Don't use plaster of paris as it will harden up so fast you'll end up throwing most of it away before you get it on the wall. You can try the above suggested mix and/or work with the veneer plaster mix alone or experiment. Use a large, wide trowel to smooth it on and make up your own "darby" with a 2 x 4 about 2' long and attempt your final smoothing with that, wait and then sand and then fill your dips again until you get a reasonably decent surface. Try to work fast, working slowly and methodically will cause more errors and you will lose sight of the "big picture" and with this kind of work you want to focus on the whole wall -- the whole job and not just a line or a lump here or there. Also, irregularities that you can't get rid of can be feathered out and a fool the eye effect can be achieved by spreading the lump or problem over a larger surface so as to remove focus on one problem area.

Thanks! We ended up just getting patching plaster at the recommendation of our local hardware store, but aren't having much luck with the mesh, so depending on how well the plaster adheres on its own, may need to look for the Durabond or similar.

Try the bonding agent - adheres old plaster to new and gives some added assurance against re-cracking. My plaster guru made the good point that if its going to re-crack, then it will do so whether or not there is mesh over it and then its a major pita to get it off. I can testify to that - my house's PO did mesh tape a and then globbed finish plaster over it. It looked like giant scabs all over the wall, didnt prevent re-cracking, and taking it off added double the time to do the repairs. Mesh tape was made for drywall joints where theres that indentation that the tape sits in. Where she put big sheets of it over plaster washers, whole sheets failed and came off as a big chunk. I think not enough plaster gets through those tiny holes to really be able to adhere firmly to the old plaster.

Thanks! We ended up skipping the tape for the plaster washers and just using a metal mesh tape in an area where the plaster had come off entirely, and then did multiple layers of patching plaster over several days. Sanding and priming it tonight. Looks decent enough, though can't say how well it will hold up long-term...but at least it's no longer loose or falling off the wall in chunks! If it doesn't hold we will probably just have our plaster guys come in, take it down to the lathe, and redo the whole wall properly, but I'll cross that bridge if we get to it. You need a bonding agent (like plaster weld) before putting on the patching coat. Unfortunately the mesh won't solve the bonding problem (it helps prevent cracks). It will stick for a time being. If it comes off, use a bonding agent, don't redo the plaster with drywall. Its a mess and expensive.
