Help Quick! Textured plaster patches on smooth plaster wall

Hi everyone,

We've just had a lot of large patching done on our old plaster walls in places where the contractors had to access water and heating pipes. The patches are large (in some places it's half the wall) and the patches have a crumbly texture to them, whereas the old wall is smooth. It makes the patch look VERY noticeable. The contractor is trying to tell me that the whole wall originally looked like the new plaster, but has been covered up with 80 yrs worth of paint which is why it now looks smooth. He says he can't sand the texture off the patches. I have a feeling he's giving me a load of BS, because that is his usual MO.

What are my options here? I just read an older post that said something about rough-coat, concrete looking plaster vs. a smooth finish-coat plaster. Can anyone give me more information about this? I need advice ASAP since the painters are at the house, waiting to paint, but I cannot have my walls looking so obviously mismatched! Please help! Thanks.
