Series of unfortunate events..... help!
Comments (27)To start a leaf cut it from your plant leaving about an inch of the petiole (leaf stem). Take the leaf from the middle row of the violet. The outer row is beginning to age, and while they can produce babies, they lack the vigor of the younger middle row and may take longer to produce babies. The new leaves are immature. Make the cut at an angle with the long section of the angle at the back of the leaf and the short in the front. Leaves will produce without this angle cut, it just helps the babies to come up at the front of the leaf rather than the back where they will be in the mother leaf's shadow. Plant the leaf in a light mix-some use the 1/3 peat, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 perlite mix. Some use just perlite. I've used both successfully. Put the leaf in a baggie or a dome. You are, in effect, making a mini greenhouse. Put in good light, not sun, and then-practice patience! Keep an eye on your leaf and water as needed. You probably won't need to water much because the baggie helps prevent water evaporation and retains humidity. Leaves will vary in the time they take to produce babies. The shortest I've had was 10 days. The longest about 6 months. As long as the leaf is healthy, it can produce babies. Most growers take a leaf from any new violet they get just in case something happens to the original. Give it a try-it's actually quite easy! Glad to see you were successful with your Grandmother's violet. Linda...See Moreunfortunately they all have the ubiquitous magazine kitchens
Comments (91)The people that frequent GW Kitchens forum are researchers who look far and wide for the perfect faucet, sink, range etc. The internet has made this possible. If you are not internet savvy (or just don't like searching endlessly), do not have a big box store or design center nearby, or don't have access to tons of design magazines--You Wouldnt know what options are available. When my parents designed their kitchen 40+ years ago, they drove 2 hours each way to get something that was not the ONLY option available in our small town: two major builders whose interior fixtures and finishes were all identical in every house they built (and every house was "custom"). Anything that has been replaced since has been on the advice of a local plumber (whatever kitchen faucet he had on the truck--and its a cheap horrible faucet), and whatever fridge fit in the slot that the local appliance store had...coupled with the fact that my mother in particular seems to think a faucet you spent 50 bucks on in 1969 should cost $50 now, not $500. So they were told what was available and they took the advice. For them it WAS what was available. I recently did a kitchen for a client who moved, but I had done some interior design work for her when she lived in her old place. When I saw the kitchen...I said Wow! this kitchen has held up well!. She said "Huh?" and I said "For a kitchen that was put in in 1980 or so it looks great!" She said: "But I put in new cabinets and countertops and floor in 1997!" She hired a kitchen fabricator from her church bulletin who came and measured and semi-custom fabricated her cabinets and countertops: He gave her an option of two door styles, two wood species and one finish(natural). Same with hardware, same with laminate...she didnt even really know what Corian was. So, she got the same kitchen more or less that anybody who hired him got. And he happened to be in a time warp. He is probably still installing the same kitchen. When we did her new kitchen in 2006-7 she was shocked, (and overwhelmed) by all the options. People who are not design junkies really have very little idea of whats out there. (And before the internet had no real way of finding it either, unless they had a good designer or builder)...See MoreUpdating Solid Wood Table with Unfortunate Finish
Comments (15)I love upcycling old furniture. My advise to you is keep the tabletop wood. sand all the varnish off and get it back to it orginal wood. paint the rest of the table and chairs with a couour that suits your room. sand them by hand first to make them feel rough then primer them a couple of times before adding the top colour coats. give the wood surface of the table a coat of quick drying varnish (colour of your choice) once dry, then gently sand wipe down with a slightly damp cloth then start again until desired affect. but chair cushions from a good home store and you won't be dissapointed...See MoreUPDATE: Dress me: what top to wear with this skirt
Comments (69)The Quince top and the Eileen Fisher top both just arrived. Quince: Nice fabric. Not a handkerchief weight linen but not heavy either. However, the fit is extremely odd. The armholes are HUGE and the body is skinny. It is like the armholes were cut for someone extremely obese whose midriff is model thin. Literally half of the side of my bra cup was visible and I couldn’t get it pulled over my hips. SMH. Eileen Fisher: Loved it BUT…when will I learn to order down a size in EF clothing?!?! The armholes are big, but not as big as the Quince top. The body is a little wide too. Unfortunately, since it was from EF Renew, there isn’t much choice in sizes. I like it enough to consider having it altered to fit. Oh, and the lavender top from Talbots with the interesting neckline also arrived. After having it go out of stock and then be re-stocked, I was skeptical that I would ever receive it. I did and it fits great and looks great! Thanks again, @Funkyart....See Moreeld6161
