Scientists at Northwestern have discovered a way to make PFAS disintegrate. I read about this on the BBC news last week. The process is simple and *cheap*. There's hope for us after all.

I don't worry about what I can't control. I miss the days when there wasn't plastic everywhere.

More and more municipalities are banning plastic single use shopping bags, mean while when I go shopping I see more than one brand of plain old WATER sold in cases and cases of plastics bottles. Inconsistency drives me wild!!

I try hard to not use plastic anything, bags, saran wrap, water bottles. I buy Tide in the box .

I sure hope the Northwestern scientists are right! We live in an area where there is a lot of PFAS disposed of in barrels buried in the ground, in what USED to be in the middle of nowhere, because that is the way they used to do things decades ago. That formerly remote land is now built up with homes and of course the barrels have been leaking and the PFAS has gotten into the river and groundwater and contaminated nearby wells. Many people in the area have been sick with lingering, unexplained illnesses and an unusually high number of people have died from cancer. The company responsible for the dumping in this case makes brands you all have heard of: Hush Puppies, Merrell, Sperry, Keds, Saucony, Chaco, etc.

Decades of using Teflon coated cookware hasn't helped the situation. Better living through chemistry? Not in this case.

The forever chemicals are from Teflon type compounds. Most people think of non-stickpans, but the material is used in hundreds of applications — medical catheters, linings for food cans, compounds such as ”Scotch Guard” and just so many other areas, domestic, medical, industrial and military. Some might argue criminal impunity — mobster or presidential in some areas of the world.

The research at Northwestern University is new and limited to only some varieties of forever chemicals, PFAS, etc.. While theoretically simple, it would not be feasible to rehabilitate an aquifer, lakes, rivers, rainwater, acres of soil. Obviously there is a lot of work to do.

Our private well showed "not detectable" as far as PFAS goes but still had to connect to the Twp water system. We did get an exception to keep our well for irrigation.
