More Reblooms and a Seedling FFO

Yesterday I expected a couple of rebloomers to start, so I went out early to get photos. The deer were back and got several buds on my rebloomers but not all. So I sprayed Repels All again last evening. This morning no more signs of deer feasting, and I was able to get photos of all but one of them today.

Tides Roll In is always a good rebloomer. You can see another rebloom scape on the way in the photo.

Seedling White Tooth X Skater #4 is reblooming. The first scapes were about 22 inches, but the rebloom scape is 33, more what I would expect from these two parents.

Seedling White Tooth X Skater #2 FFO - Tuxie Cat broke the first scape that emerged on this one way back in early May. I'm glad it rebloomed, so I could see it this year.

Seedling SC Francis Busby X Blazing Cannons is still reblooming.

Last Chance for Romance is still going strong.

Great shot of Katherine Caldwell. The lavender pink color is so girly.......Really like Little Trooper. I had Alpine Mist in my hot little hands this spring, but in the planting frenzy I think it got tossed with the trash. It was a bonus plant and with my limited space (especially after my buying spree) if I could get only one more small flowered daylily of the two, it would be your Little Trooper. Mantis, Nancy and Kate - Dearest Mahoghany is still being grown in a pot. I'm going to planting it either in a raised bed or in the ground this fall. I hope under those conditions it will multiply. I will say the previous two years the pot was in too much shade. When I won it three years at the Region 10 auction, I split it with a friend who lives in TN. Hers died, so I don't know how vigorous it is. Nancy - I hope your Confessions makes it. I'd like to see if yours would ultimately have a good plant habit. I know the first two years I had mine, it got hit by grubs. But it has been heavily dosed with grub killer for two years now. Also, I set a lot of pods on it last year. Sherry - I got Carmen Renee because Brad showed so many pretty pictures of it. I've been happy with its performance. It's a good multiplier. Nan and Kay - Princess Diary X Dearest Valentine #1 is one I like a lot. I like the large watermark and the yellow edge makes the rosy red color pop. This is its first year to bloom, and I'm thrilled with the rebloom, especially since it is so covered up by taller seedlings in the bed. I hope it will have more buds next year. Mantis and David - The one thing Star Lord has not done well is multiply, but I did set quite a bit of seed on it last year, and that may be why. It was a terrific pod setter last year when temps were cooler. I've had it for three years, and it's only three fans. It is the registered height for me (32 inches), and it has better branching here than registered (4-way). As I said, the best scape has 23 buds and the other two scapes have 19, which is fantastic in a year without rain in May and most of June. The other Derrow purple I acquire at the same time, Steven Scott Derrow, has multiplied must faster (6 fans) but it's not the registered height and won't set pods for me. Those darn deer! Glad you got some photos despite those varmits. So nice the scape on #4 improved its height, it is my favorite of these, its purple : )

Last Chance for Romance is still looking fabulous, wish I knew what happened to mine.

Does Repels All work better than Liquid Fence?

Seedlings look very good. Too bad about the deer but hopefully the spray works to keep them away. I haven't sprayed here in weeks but the deer appear to be feasting on the wild berries and leaves on low hanging trees along the one side of the property. How did you do with your seed harvesting this year?

The seedlings do look good. Glad you got to see the second one as it appears to be promising-in looks, anyway! Also good to see rebloom on the SCFB seedling.

I have nibblers on my foliage now but I think it is rabbits as there are scapes with buds on the same plants that are untouched. Deer would have eaten those buds first.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Kate - I do think #2 is a good looking seedling, and I'm glad to know it reblooms. It's starting out with only 7 buds, but bud counts this year are no indicator of future performance. I've got some rabbits here too, but they mostly seem to be nibbling on emerging new baby fans.

Julia - I had the fewest seed pods I've ever collected, and most of them had only two or three seeds. The heat and lack of rain kept them from developing more. It was very disappointing not to be able to hybridize with the many new plants I've bought in the past three years since I bought them expressly for hybridizing reasons. Most of the seed crosses that did make it were done with extra early patterned daylilies.

Mantis - I've never used Liquid Fence. The best thing I've tried is a product call Deer Out, which I bought online. It has an oil in it that causes the product to stay on through several rains. But I was out of that and had a little Repels All left in a bottle. The smell of it is horrible -intense garlic mixed with mint. It almost keeps ME out of the garden. Repels All really works well on keeping rabbits and groundhogs away from my plants, and the deer for the time it stays on.

Sherry - I really like #4. The bloom has a lot going in with it. I like the edge, the patterned sepals, the little darts that come out of the throat into the eye, the colors and the shape. I've got a lot of pretty seedlings from the cross of White Tooth and Skater. I hope at least a couple of them will develop better bud counts next year. #4 is among my top four favorites out of 11 siblings.

Kay - Both of the seedlings you like rebloom, so that makes them winners in my book.

Brad - Last Chance for Romance is a great one for the late season. I'm thinking about eliminating some other "late" cultivars that aren't really late bloomers in my garden. I've already moved one out.
