FFO's, Foursomes and Rebloomers

These are from yesterday, which was very rainy during the morning and this morning, which was finally cooler.

Dearest Mahoghany with a double FFO - It's started blooming much later than it should have. It has not multiplied in the three years I've had it.

Orange Clown ffo - This one is a late bloomer, but it usually starts about week earlier.

From This Moment On is another late bloomer. Scapes are short and buds are few this time.

Strawberry Alarm Clock is light colored because of heat indices of 110-112 on Thursday and Friday. It also has short scapes and few buds this year.

Cherokee Star

Confessions of a Hemaholic usually has four to six blooms each day.

Cherokee Star is very a lovely red. Stands out nicely. Nice group of pics. Glad you got rain and cooler temps.

Julia - Cherokee Star is a nice landscape daylily. Unfortunately this is our only day in the 80s. It's back to the mid-90s tomorrow and for most of this week.

Flowergirl - Autumn Jewels and and Desperado Love do have flowers that are similar colors. Both are descended from El Desperado. I grow all three because I like that color combo. AJ and DL have different shaped blooms, different sized blooms, different scape heights, and different bloom times. AJ has a 6-inch bloom on 40-inch scapes and is a late bloomer. DL has a 5-inch bloom on 26-inch scapes (it's 29 inches here) and blooms midseason. Chris - Mantis is right. Bullfrog Kisses was hybridized by Frank Smith. The Trimmers have a general listing with newer daylilies hybridized by others on it. I wanted to add more Frank Smith daylilies because I've had such good luck with American Doll and I Remember You. So I bought Bullfrog Kisses and Patsy Cline from Watermill, along with four of Trimmers intros because the prices were the best I could find on the Smiths. Debra

I always like Royal Jester when you show that one. Blue Jay is really nice too, you have several nice ones reblooming. I have a few reblooming, but most of those are finishing up now. I was most surprised with Mississippi Man. I only have a single fan, but it just put up its 2nd rebloom scape. Looks like it is adding a couple of tiny fans too. I have always loved dianthus, and there are some really pretty varieties now. Like Maryl's, I think all of mine have gradually died out. Some of the biennial forms outlasted the perennial. Guess I need to replace mine, yours remind me how much I miss them.

Maryl - Pierce says the edge on Aunt Patsy is orange and gold. I have seen the edge look pink, or gold, or orange or cream on different days. Edge color seems to vary with the temperatures in my garden. The photo posted above is how it looked about 11 a.m. after a string of 98-degree days and no watering. When cooler and well-hydrated, the throat is more green than yellow. Here are a couple of other photos of it: It is NOT sunfast. The blooms go limp and faded in the afternoon heat when temps are above 92 degrees. The extremely sunfast red Pierce that I have is Such A Blaze. It's sunfast up to 100 degrees with a heat index of 112. I was amazed by it this season. Such A Blaze I like both them, and they are both semi-evergreen. This is my second year for Such A Blaze. It has overwintered and multiplied well (started with 2 fans and is 6 fans now), but it has not rebloomed so far. Aunt Patsy was acquired this Spring as a single fan, which quickly added a second fan. It has rebloomed well on both fans. Aunt Patsy's flower is an enormous 7.5 inches, while Such A Blaze is in the 6-inch range. Aunt Patsy's scapes are a few inches taller than Such A Blaze's. They are both very pretty reds. Debra

Kate - I like the white daylilies for their cooling effect too. Orchid Linen has been behaving for several days. Hope the deer stay out of your gardens while you're away. Maryl - The later edges on Bluegrass Shadows are cream white and gold. There is so little gold on it that I don't know that I would call it chicken fat. We lost Zuzu three summers ago to a coyote attack. That was confirmed by neighbors who found his body six blocks away. The coyote population has increased as the deer population has. Coco vanished in Spring 2022, and I would guess she met the same fate. Sammy, the black cat who was the wariest of all, disappeared last September. She was my husband's favorite, and he drove the neighborhoods looking for her and posting photos and info about her, but we never heard anything. Now the only cat we feed outside is their mother, Tuxie, who stays here part-time. Kay - Thanks for your comments. Tiffany Shade is always short and the color is a weird one. It photographs better than it looks in person. Even though it blooms so late, it will probably be on my move-out list. Debra

Cherokee Star is a brilliant red, nice. Confessions of a Hemaholic is doing well. I really like it, do you? From This Moment On is a very pretty yellow especially in a clump. Sweet Child of Mine is lovely. White Tooth x Skater 2R reblooming is a nice purple I really like it and the rain drops afte so long are nice.

Well, now we know why Dearest Mahogany is not widely available. Cherokee Star never disappoints. I haven't noticed what height Strawberry Alarm Clock is yet here.

Kay - There are things I like about Confessions of a Hem. and things I don't. It's nowhere close to its registration height in my garden, which I don't like. Here It has nine inch flowers on 26 inch scapes, and that looks totally out of proportion. My plant doesn't get the advertised branching or bud count either. I like the look of the blooms and I love that it sets seed so late in the season in extremely high temps. I look forward to seeing some of its seedlings bloom next year. It also has never rebloomed for me. I wonder if it will rebloom for you.

Confessions of a Hemoholic looks good. I just got it this spring, it is not looking good. I am hoping the rain revives it. With what you say, I may not replace it if it dies. But it is so pretty... such a shame about Dearest Mahogany not multiplying. A beautiful daylily. Those are my favorites. Nice that your seedling is reblooming!

Dearest Mahogany is pretty and Cherokee Star is a bright beacon. I had that one once but it did not survive. Sweet Child of Mine is always pretty. Gotta love it when seedlings rebloom!

Mantis, Nancy and Kate - Dearest Mahoghany is still being grown in a pot. I'm going to planting it either in a raised bed or in the ground this fall. I hope under those conditions it will multiply. I will say the previous two years the pot was in too much shade. When I won it three years at the Region 10 auction, I split it with a friend who lives in TN. Hers died, so I don't know how vigorous it is.

Nancy - I hope your Confessions makes it. I'd like to see if yours would ultimately have a good plant habit. I know the first two years I had mine, it got hit by grubs. But it has been heavily dosed with grub killer for two years now. Also, I set a lot of pods on it last year. That can cause reduced vigor the following year too.

Debra, it's too bad Dearest Mahogany doesn't increase. Let us know if it improves when you plant it in the gound. Your White Tooth seedling is my favorite today, but I also like Cherokee Star.

Cherokee Star is a standout for both of us. I give it an B+ here for color retention in our triple digit heat................ I'm hating this heat. Beautiful daylilies that would normally shine in even the low 90's, are almost panting by the end of the day..........Oh yes, Strawberry Alarm Clock is a pretty pink and doesn't look too pale if it holds on to that color until later..............Maryl
