How to transition carpeted landing to wood stairs

I have carpeted stairs leading to the second floor, and want to change the stairs to wood or vinyl plank, but leave the second floor landing as carpeted. Most pictures I've seen of this transition have a landing or "finish" wood tread at the edge of the landing with the carpet behind it. This tread is usually a little narrower than the stair treads. Is a wood landing tread required by code if the stairs are wood, or could we wrap carpet around the nose of the landing and into the first stair riser?

Could you? Yes the landing can be anything you want. But why? If you are putting in wood stairs the landing should be wood.

I have wood stairs to carpet. Only the stairs in my home are wood. I don't see why you can't do either way.

There is no transition. The carpet is loosened at the bottom of the step until the wood is in...then reattach the carpet and trim the carpet so that it just touches the wood. It will hide the expansion gap also. Very simple and as common as anything ever gets.

I think it might look better to bring that knee-wall transition straight out and turn 90 deg. left to the opposite wall to square it off. Transition strips are commonly mitered to make turns.

Since the upper portion of your stairs are basically walled off from the downstairs, the carpet idea could work. Your stair carpet needs to match your upstairs carpet. There could be issues with the rise and run of the stairs, with the lower treads not being the same height (no carpet and pad makes them a little lower) which can be unsafe.

Theonly neatest way to go from a carpeted landing to wood stairs is to wrap the carpet around the nose of the landing. Here's a pic found online.
