Painting Transition - Help!

I finally have a color decided on, lights purchased, vinyl flooring, etc. etc.....but now my question is - how do i transition as far as the paint color? I think they call it a "split foyer" - i love the teal-ish color, and wouldnt mind it to start going up the stairs (as of now all I know is it will cover the entryway walls, with textured gold on the ceiling) - but i don't think i want to commit to painting my entire house this color? How would you make an intentional transition??? Chair railing? Gradients? Uhhmm... please! help!

You could end the color in the corner right next to the outside door, and start the color for the stairway in that corner, and on to that little short wall, and then up the stairs. I also cant see the other part of the foyer, but, if you have an inside corner before you get to the right side of the stairway, maybe do the same thing there. I like the teal.

The big difference between the inspiration and your house is that the inspiration is a completely defined and separate room, and your entry is completely open. I am not sure it will translate.

Drarc, since you are not looking to change the location of the dining area, in case you decide to keep all the cabs the same stain, I was thinking that you might even consider having a custom dining table with some kind of stonetop (same as your counters or something coordinating) -- then your table would actually act as a prep peninsula/extra space when you are not eating at it! This, especially since your kitchen looks to be kind of on the smaller side, and if you wish you had more space. I think that in case of small spaces, the key to successful utilization of space is to define the spaces flexibly. I am not sure if I am going overboard .. I know you did not say you needed more space. But my imagination has been fired by my morning coffee... :-)

I don't know why my photos are posting so large, even after I resize them to be small. Rather than show you ENORMOUS photos, I'll link instead: I could see this torchiere in the corner where you currently have a floor lamp. Not sure I would want more than one though, even though I do think you need two floor lamps at your sofa. torchiere Since you liked those brass end tables, you might like this simple brass floor lamp. These would look good as a pair around your sofa. reading lamp What are your thoughts about your existing sconces? I don't much like them (had similar ones in my Victorian house), but if they are of the period of the house, I'm not sure that I would change them. Have you considered having covers built for the radiators? They look great and give a little shelf space too. Along those lines, I worry a little about drapery touching the radiators - do they get quite hot? Do you have an inspiration photo for the swooping of one panel - I've seen curtains held back high, or held back low, sometimes mostly covering window, othertimes mostly exposing the window.

I thought this was a blank slate and if so why do marble in the bathrooms. I think I would need to see the house and the suite in the center is a bit of a mystery sow show that in a to scale floor plan . Where are you located? IMO all stone floors only work in the tropics they are hard on feet, backs and knees for sure.

I am wondering if a high contrast paint color would just highlight all the choppy walls in that space

Just paint the door teal and put art next to it with the same colors in it. If you paint the walls you will have more visual chaos due to the many walls and shapes there.

IMO around the door and the wall to the right up the stairs if that color is the plan . I think the door that color and all the rest the same as the rest of the walls is a safe bet Not sure at all about the gold on the ceiling you heard the expression silk purse from sows ear. IMO your home is not grand and adding gold ceiling will not makes it so becareful to not ruin what appears to be a nice house . If you really want anymore advice IMO we need to see the spaces next to this entry and I am wondering what that bottom pic you posted is showing us?

Agree with Patricia that there are too many differences between your house and your inspiration picture to make that treatment work in your house. It would look over the top in your house. Agree with @Rawketgrl that painting the door is a better idea, and finding other ways to incorporate the color. Maybe this treatment would work in your dining room - if you have a formal dining room, and the style of your house and the rest of your decor is traditional/glam. But from what you're showing us, it isn't.
