A waterfall question
Comments (5)Hello This waterfall is located in a shadehouse so exposed to the elements. Using a 150 gallon aquarium as the reservoir Water is released on an expanding foam "rockface" around 5 x 3 feet high. Set it up in March which is the dry season and was losing about 10 gallons a day.Now that the humidity is up it's dropped to about two. I'm using mostly epiphytes on the face and it took some time to grab hold. Has also been exposed to some very heavy rainfall but is no problem once established. I am getting a terrific amount of tannins ,washed into the aquarium but hopefully will stabilize over time. I used a top soil substrate in the aquarium and planted with a variety of submerged plants while using a fine gravel in the collection area, shagnum in pockets on the "face". This is by far the largest most complex setup I've attempted and I'm using only natural sunlight . So far it's working lol gary...See MoreKitchen Countertops for Island
Comments (36)My first thought is that you need something that "reads" white, very much like the green kitchen photo you posted. I am seeing something with a heavy gray component and maybe some warmth in it, too. Look at Tumbled Roca. I am only looking at a computer screen, not actual chips, but this Tumbled Roca looks like it would coordinate nicely with the Oiled Soapstone for the perimeter and the maple cabs. Everyone seems to like dark counters these days, but I lean towards light colors for both function and aesthetics. My BIL, who is an architect and a great cook puts a lot of thought into his kitchen designs. (His clients often do not use an ID or KD.) He feels that the single most influential surface WRT lightness and brightness in a kitchen is the counter top. I also feel deeply concerned about your white appliances. (Yes, I am feeling melodramatic today!) I am afraid that you need something in there to tie in the white range and fridge. If everything becomes dark, they're going to stick out like two sore thumbs. As for the cabs looking yellow, have you switched out your light bulbs? If they are regular incandescents, try using Reveal for a clearer light. It will shift the color in that room. Do it before you make any other color choices because it will effect everything!...See MoreSoapstone island install - not the best. What would you do?
Comments (33)joshua, I appreciate your comments as you are THE soapstone guy around here. Fancy a visit to Halifax? How hard would it be to refinish the backside - I understand this would be the best way to get book matched slabs. Does he need special equipment to do this or is it a function of time and sanding the correct way? In speaking with the soapstone supplier, they indicated getting 2 slabs that are back to back in the same lot is not difficult. Theoretically then, one could get slabs that could be book matched with refinishing the other side of one slab. Joshua, could you give me your opinion on where in this island you would place the seam? If you had book matched slabs would you do it in the middle of the island or would it depend on the pattern of the stone? Ideally in a quiet area? I don't expect every little vein to match. As someone noted, the veins at the top of the seam are a pretty good match but that only covers about a quarter of the seam and the majority of the seam is not well matched. This is on the side of the island where you sit (and hence look at a lot) and where people first come up to the island when they enter the kitchen. My kitchen is also very bright with a great amount of natural light - to the immediate left of this end of the island is a glass slider. The veins and seam in the stone are bathed in light most of the day. I fully expected to ok the soapstone before the install. With the quartzite counters I held up the fabrication for 3 days because I couldn't get there to see the planned cuts. I was as surprised as anyone when he said it was all done and ready to be installed! I didn't even know it had arrived. I thought he would let me know when it arrived and then I would arrange a time to go out and see it. He is a good hour from me. Apparently he does not routinely allow people to see the planned cuts. In fact his words were - this is unheard of...guess he hasn't been dealing with too many tko people :) At the end of the day the world will not come crashing down and I am sure over time I will become accustomed to it. The perfectionist in me cringes when I look at it though....See MoreHow big of a range top for a 10 feet island?
Comments (73)aaaand I don’t even have a fan over the stovetop....eeek ....how have I managed to live ...happily...like this..... for 19 years?. And I'm guessing that if you actually cleaned your ceiling you'd find it is not quite as clean as you think. When I moved into my NY place the previous owners did lots of stir fry cooking with an inadequate hood. And this is with a stove against the wall. It took me over 2 weeks of daily scrubbing to get the grease off the tops of the cabinets, the walls, under the cabinets, etc, yet at first glance the place looked clean. There's a very good chance that the range you grew up with, and the one you're using now, have nowhere near the power of a BlueStar. Agreed!...See MoreM S
