planting Kentucky wisteria blue moon

Hello everyone,

I have a Blue Moon wisteria in a pot. Now that fall is around the corner, I am contemplating playing it beside the house beside the front porch soon.

What are your thoughts? Any potential for it to damage the porch’s foundation? It’s a 100 year old house.

Just wanted to add more spring color:

That depends on the construction of your home and the amount of maintenance pruning you are prepared to do. Wisteria is very commonly grown on houses over here, but our homes are usually bilt out of brick or masonry on solid foundations. Siding and wood construction are rare.

A friend's house. Twice yearly pruning. 250 year old house.

never plant anything in august... target mid septmeber or so .... when nights are in the 50s.. a recovery period.. regardless of the fall day ... thats is for ALL PLANTs.. not special rules for your plant ...

plants do not harm foundations... but they can take advantage of prexisting problems ... so i have no idea what to tell you on your old house ...

ALWAYS add your location to all posts .. big city name.. if you want help with plants. .. i dont know if you are in KY.. or that is the common name of the plant...

Well, that's not the new growth color I was expecting, I'm sorry to say. That growth is fairly well hardened off. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I would remove that leaf and throw it away in the trash. Are any other leaves affected? Josh

In my yard I have a Amethyst Falls wisteria vine which is being trained into a tree. I just purchased a Blue Moon variety which will be trained onto a wooden fence that get's full sun. I have wild wisteria growing near a State Park near me which I thought I could transplant and use in my yard. After noticing that it practically has taken over a city block, I thought better of it and decided to stay with my American varieties. I'm pleased to hear that the Blue Moon variety is fragrant as I intend to move it to a portico over the backyard patio once it is built. I have two questions for all the "Blue Moon" owners out there: 1. How much growth do you see per season with this variety? 2. Have you actually seen re-blooming with this variety and if so, are their any tricks to force the wisteria to re-bloom that I should know about? Thanks, smithmal

Thanks..my bad..they all popped open..omg- just yesterday. I guess I thought something was wrong with them. But it just wasn't time for them to bloom. They are blue moon The other wisteria budded and bloomed last month. I thought something was wrong with them Thanks for sharing the photos yours are gorgeous..and wow sure did grow alot. I bought a blue moon wisteria for my mom aboaut 3 years ago. She also had trouble with bunnies or deer eating the new growth, especially the first year. I bought her some spray that was made from pig or cow blood. It worked, but we researched to try to find something less gross. Our discovery--soap shavings. She buys cheap bath soap bars at the dollar store and walks around her flower beds and shaves bits of it around her plants using a paring knife. It seems to work. I guess the scent keeps them away. You have to relace over the growing season. Especially after a few heavy rains. I've heard of people using dish soap and water as well. I wonder if human hair clippings might work also. Good Luck! That is a beautiful wisteria. My house has work is siding unfortunately.

I am not able to edit my post for some reason. I was trying to add my city and zone - Seattle 8b. Kentucky wisteria is the common name of the plant. It is supposedly half vigorous as the Chinese varieties.

Wisteria needs something to twine on so if you do go for it you’ll need wires, wall nails or trellis.

This one is near DD’s house. It’s held up on supports away from the walls.
