Design Dilemma Paint Exterior

GREEN Shingle Roof with yellow siding

We just purchased this house and I’ve never really been a fan of yellow homes and I’m really not a fan of the green roof but they replaced it to sell the house, so as it is brand new, it stays. Any suggestions for a new color palate? Maybe something sort of subtle and earthy, not bright or flashy. Tips for garage door, porch columns, trim, and vinyl are greatly appreciated!

Maybe a green colour? Shutters could be the same as the brick? Front door same as shutters.

Hi, What a cute little house! No worries, sometimes the coloring doesn't come out so well on the monitor and will look completely different in person. I can see why you chose the palette that you have though, it's exactly what I thought before I read your response. We have a 2 story colonial and the color of our siding is very similar to the color you have. We don't have any brick though, so we went with a Certainteed Roof in a medium toned charcoal color that has a touch of the brick color mixed in it. Without the brick the color looks great with the siding; our trim is all white as well. I almost think if you went with a lighter color on the trim it would offer a little more pop to the whole elevation. I know you didn't ask for this next suggestion but I think it would also look cute to have something flanking the door on each side. Usually people have lighting but if that's not possible, maybe you can hang some baskets on hangers or something. I think the brick just needs something more to help it blend in with the rest of the front. I love your landscape and how the gardens are layered with color. Very pretty.

I was actually thinking of painting the shutters white, too, after I saw a picture of a green house with white shutters and it looked very nice. We also were going to close up the gable vents (the roof will have a ridge vent so we shouldn't need the gable vents, and bats like to hang from them and make a mess on the siding). I was thinking I could do some kind of accent siding in place of the gables, in some sort of color or even a stained wood type color (if the shutters were white).

Thanks Denita. Ac is coming out when central air is installed next month. That was a garage converted to a room so it looks odd. When I eventually re do the exterior everything will be uniform. I like the classic white and black ccombo but was really hoping to go darker. That pic was before I bought the house. Already started changes on landscaping. Will Post update.

My house has white vinyl siding, and it requires constant maintenance in terms of cleaning. We live in the country (we're farmers), and the white shows everything - especially cobwebs, dead (and live!) insects, and dust from the road and surrounding fields. It is especially bad around my entrances and windows (probably because that's where I see it close up). We power wash the house in the spring and fall, and I constantly clean my entrances by hand so that it looks respectable. The house we are building will have darker wood siding and a grey metal roof. I have no doubt that the darker siding will also get dirty, however I think it probably won't show up as much as it does on the white siding.

I love the color scheme on this house.

Here are several grays that could work. Keep in mind that paint looks up to 30% lighter in the sun. I might choose one from the third row.

Is that siding vinyl? House I recently bought has painted vinyl, while it is ok, it is still obviously painted so not sure I would go that route.

Your home is a nice soft yellow that goes very well with your new roof. So…I would leave it that color. Why paint it? Once you paint the siding (if it is vinyl) you will have to continue to paint it. Perhaps play with a very dark green (Charleston Green) on your shutters if you want a change. But I like the white shutters. Or change your front door to a dark green. Lovely home! Good luck!

One suggestion I have is to replace the porch columns with ones that have more substance. The ones in place now are far to spindly and need to be beefed up.

^^ totally agree in the columns - before i tackled painting i would add significant landscaping and make the front door/porch more welcoming - right now there is literally nothing else to look at besides the siding and roof -

thoughtful foundational plantings would go such a long way, since its a blank slate I would hire a pro for the design

Yellow does go with the green roof but I find this suggestion would give the house more personnality!

Just paint the siding, install wall sconces, and ad a perennial flower bed for more curb appeal,

can't they paint those asphalt shingles? you might look into that.

otherwise go w/a soft green, white w/dark trim, or try this combo

and replace the awful door style

another color combo w/more modern door and garage door, address and light

updated garage door w/windows/iron hardware, new light, vertical numbers. I'd also replace those skinny posts w/more modern cedar posts. new front door, plants

i'd remove the shutters too.

I am not fond of yellow houses, but, your house is a nice soft yellow, and it goes well with the roof, so, if it is vinyl siding, I would most certainly leave it. You can improve your curb appeal and look of your house, with some new lush landscaping. It looks a bit bare right now. Maybe a bit of color in your porch furniture too.
