Winter care for this year's bench grafts - zone 5 in containers
Comments (7)Mary, I bought several grafted hickories from Grimo Nurseries this year, and they gave specific advice on how to protect the grafts over the winter. Keep in mind this is for trees planted in the ground, but perhaps it might be applied somehow to container trees as well. It seems the grafts are vulnerable to weather. They recommend tree shelters/tubes used summer and winter. At the end of the summer the tubes should be raised several inches to allow the trees to go dormant. Then the shelters should be lowered, and sand should be placed in the shelter high enough to cover the graft. This protects from both weather and rodents. Sounds good to me, and this is the advice I am following. I use Blue-X tubes as well. I also have several hundred ungrafted pawpaws in containers which I am simply moving to an unheated barn for the winter. Good luck with your plants, and let us know how they look next spring....See MoreCan I manage a zone 6 or 5b rose in zone 5?
Comments (29)Dcrosby, You may be right at the edge of zone 5/6. Check the map here. If you are still zone 5, you just need to do some winter protection. It should be fine. Climate affects disease susceptibility. In dryer, more arid climate like AZ or CA, they don't have to deal with fungal disease like we do here in humid East Coast. When you read people's recommendations, you want to see where they live. Different climate gives different results to the same rose variety. Spraying for roses every week or every two weeks is not my kind of fun (anymore). I didn't even want to smell the blooms after I sprayed the bushes. Now I don't spray, most of my roses esp. Austins look naked by mid summer. Here is a link that might be useful: MA new plant hardiness zone map...See MoreShrub Rose with Fall Color in Zone 5 or less
Comments (7)I think I am going to focus on the Rugosa family of roses since almost all of them get a good reliable fall color. Thank you for the suggestions so far. How about a suggestion for one that is: 3-4" tall and wide and tends to maintain a more "uniform" shape? I'd like one that is a heavy everblooming variety as well. Similar to what the knockout can do. Seems like alot of them have one heavy flush then bloom sporadically. I think Wildberry Breeze Rugosa will be good, but not sure about the blooms. A small grouping is going to be used as a backdrop to a ginkgo tree with a low spreading speciman in the front of the tree(like a prostrate pine)....See MoreOwn root care for winter in zone 5A,
Comments (2)I think that seil's comments are good advice. But, I'm going to throw a "but" in here. "But" since you have this new Pergola & if you wish to try an "experiment" with your idea of getting some roses thru the winter....place an order for 3 roses (usually the minimum order) from a rose seller & see how it works for you. Gardening is about expermenting & learning by doing if something is a good, bad or so-so idea are some of the fun things to do as a gardener....See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
