Hardiness and fragrance are hard to come by for me. Although I've never tried Brownells or Bucks, most roses do not survive winters for me without protection. Since I am a lazy gardener, I don't like to bother with protecting them. After too many roses dying, I made a switch to explorer roses. They are completely hardy, no winter protection, and usually, no die back at all. They aren't as nice as the hybrid teas, of course, but still pretty although mine have no fragrance. However, I also grow some hybrid rugosas, which are the easiest roses you can grow. No spraying, no winter protection, no fertilizing, they just grow! My Belle Poitevine (not sure about the spelling?) is covered with big, fragrant pink flowers. Also, magnifica is a good one, dark pink. The fragrance is very strong, old rose. True, they aren't for cutting, but they look great as a hedge, and they are the toughest roses you can buy. I also have a pink Grootendoorst, it is pretty, with clusters of small double red roses, but has no smell. Rugosas won't bloom continously, but I don't mind because by July the japanese beetles eat up all my roses anyway.

What I've seen about Tea wood is based on not-cold but other damage. Often I think that Hybrid Teas are wimps. If there's a canker on one side of a stem, here, at least, that canker will gird the entire stem by midsummer and (poof) that stem is lost as is those roots' potential to replace it with a cane that will last through the next winter. Teas, OTOH, can tolerate canker around a bud union, even if its ugly, so long as it's on woody wood, half a canes' phloem and xylem is enough to support outer growth. The same thing happens when a certain riding lawnmower (not driven by me) hooks a mature cane and breaks it but not completely. Again, the father out growth can survive with about half of the xylem and phloem going to it. If you see black, if you see a magenta halo that halo is indicative of active fungal activity. Cutting just below that isn't enough. You need to go down two or three inches below active fungi. Remember that fungal hyphae extend below where you can see the problem. I worry that we are going to get a PM outbreak similar to the one we had after the post Easter freeze. When the growth normally would be mature and resistant to our PM strains.....I fear that our just maturing growth will be vulnerable (but that means that some of our roses will have survived.)

Keep them in the garage or basement. You're at the cold end of their hardiness ranges, and they will not survive in the ground, in pots. They'll need a good long growing season to establish a root system sufficient to handle your winters...much deeper than the pots will allow.

I'm in zone 4a in CO and I do mulch all of my peonies--tree, herbaceous and Itoh. We typically have snow on the ground from Dec through the beginning of April; not 6-8 ft high though, thank God! We routinely get at least a week during the winter where temps get down to -20 to -30F. I've never had an issue with fungal diseases and we get snow/melt/repeat from March through May. I think the only time it would be an issue is if the beds weren't well draining and that would be a problem mulch or no mulch. I'd ask the advice of some of the friendlier big growers further north. Hollingsworth, Adelmans and A&D have been really good about answering questions emailed to them in my experience. Good luck on your venture, sounds exciting!
