If they are matching the vertical lines to match from the countertop to the backsplash piece right above it, it will be lovely. Corners can’t be guaranteed to match for obvious reasons. Good place to put your canister set….

Vertical will draw your eye down instead of across your beautiful counters and slab backsplash. I wouldn't like that. I would stop now and talk with them about options. If they didn't get approval before cutting the slab, you have a strong bargaining position.

Thanks Shata: they presented me the layout. but didnt tell me the grain directions. after they cut one slab, i realize that it is vertical from countertop to backsplash.

I found a UK installer installed a Maldives quartzite with vertical veins.

I tried my best to recover the color, vein, and direction of the countertop based on the coutertop.

I guess below is how the fabricator achieves the top-down match. The fabricator has stoped. But one slad has been cut. I might lose money of one slab?

The kitchen you posted with the vertical slab behind the stove looks pretty great. Your veining is more subtle than the posted example. Although it makes “more sense” for veining to go horizontal, the look can work.

But if you’re going to be unhappy, you can’t take a chance. Is there enough stone to go horizontal for the countertop and then you can change your backsplash to something simple? Your stone is so beautiful you must make sure to love the way it looks. If you’re hesitating now, I’m concerned you won’t ever love it if vertically installed. Glad you stopped to take a breath.

The veining look subtle because it is printed using a black-white printer. The picture is the correct one. @RedRyder

Re the vein direction: Can you change the vein direction on just the island? Maybe that would help.

Oh, Yanjie, I can feel your pain coming through your posts. I wish I had the expertise to help. Your stone is gorgeous and it’d look ok going vertical - except I agree with you about that one corner (your depiction helped me see things clearly). I will say, I think horizontal would still be better, so if you have a chance to change it I would. I’m glad your fabricator stopped. Can you switch your handmade sample to horizontal on the island to go with the left countertops as Shasta has suggested? Maybe we can get an idea of what that would look like. The stone is amazing and I think ultimately it will look beautiful either way.

Well, I really do like the 3 slabs horizontal. Is it an option for you to buy another slab that will match ok? If so, then I’d bite the bullet and pay the extra. But, then again, it’s hard to say that why not vertical?? It’s less common but that doesn’t make it bad. Yanjie - how do you feel about seeing the two choices close together? And is buying more slabs actually an option for you?

@Connecticut Yankeeeee i showed the two demos to my wife. She said she doesnt feel a big difference between vertical and horizontal.

Yanjie- I think if your wife is good with it, that’s half the battle. Who will spend more time in the kitchen- you, your wife or both equally? I guess it’s then up to you to decide if you can like the vertical since that seems the easiest way to go here. I don’t think vertical is bad, really. It’s different. The pix you posted of the Maldives stone set vertically in someone else’s kitchen were beautiful. I think my brain certainly goes to horizontal as the norm because it’s so common. Remember, Yanjie, I’m no pro - I’m only posting my opinions on what I see. I cannot help with seams or other details of installation. I just give my impressions. I truly think the stone will be stunning in your home and I’m betting that once you’ve lived with it for a bit, the vertical won’t bother you.

@User i asked the installer to demonstrate how a piece of sink area full backsplash connects to a piece of sink area countertop. i will see the real sample tomorrow morning. i will post a picture tomorrow. i saw the cut pieces just now. it is not that bad for vertical vein.

the color is verg light. the vertical grain lines are less denser than my printed paper based demo. how do you like the vertical vein installation? does it look very unconfortable for you.

they said they will ensure the marching veins in the L shape (corner is hard to ensure matching)?

my stone color is lighter than the UK maldives countetop color. please refer to the previous reply that has a UK maldives quartzite countertop.

in the L shape corner area, the fabricator said, he will use a lighter piece so I will not see too many vertical lines.

@heatheron40 it is vertical vein. not so common in many houses. that was my concern yesteday. now i need to make decision whether i should let them to cut my second stone.

Wow, that’s beautiful! I vote for continuing with the project. Your wife is ok with it. But you, Yanjie - do you have any really strong objections to the way it looks?? Or are you kinda like I was - a little disconcerted because it was going to be vertical? At first, vertical things looked a bit odd to me because horizontal is ubiquitous. But I think that stone is so gorgeous, the installation looks like it’s going to be amazing. I mean, many people here have horror stories of working with their contractors/installers these days. Yours has really gone the extra mile to help you decide. I know it must be difficult. It’s a lot of money and you’ll see it every day. But try to separate the fact that “whoa, nobody does vertical” from the “does Yanjie like it”. Good luck, my friend!

This fabricator is clearly working hard to please you and do this job right. I think the matching veins look good so if you like the vertical go for it. It will definitely be unique and the contractor will insure it looks right.

@RedRyder After a careful thinking, I think the facbricator is doing his best to find the optimal solution. In this solution, he ensures the vein matching from countertop to backsplash, as well as the vein matching from left to right, except the corner area, given the limited two slabs. But, he promises to use a ligher less-directional piece in the corner, so the corner will be less mismatched. I feel that is already the best he can do.

I have a similar stone in my master bathroom that is horizontal. I love it so when I first saw the vertical version of your slab I did not care for it that way.

After the last post where it is the actual product, I fell in love with it vertical. So unique and very stunning. My vote is go for it.

Looks great, I guess you would have to be standing right on top of it to see that the counter graining direction goes up the wall. From afar it's not that noticeable.

I would have voted horizontal, but I really like how the vertical came out! It highlights the veining of the stone.
