Fireplace Mantle Update Ideas Needed

What are some ideas on how I should update this fireplace mantle? Paint it, leave it? Any other thoughts?

Seems like a nice traditional FP - the brick is pretty low key. Is there something you don't like about it or is your style ultra modern? Smart doggo - I bet that hearth is nice and cool lol :)

The mantle is huge and houses tb and stereo etc- 13’w x 4’ h x 2.5’deep. All trim around windows and doors is light oak as well- dilemma is to paint mantle or not as well as need ideas for items to put on top Recommendations for brick fireplace also needed Thank you- stuck!

Your room is very nice. I like the understated combination you have going of browns and whites. Currently, your mantel kind of fades into the brick. I love painted brick and that would make the mantel stand out, but in this case, I like your current brick. Would you consider painting the mantel a soft white or whitewash to emphasize it against the brick and stay with the brown-white combo? I also think a bolder piece of art on the fireplace would bring more life to it and add color.

There is a RustOLeum muted gray spray paint intended for BBQ grills. You might be able to remove the mantel shelf and its supports and leave the board that is flat against the chimney and, perhaps, cover it with a new fireplace surround or build the surround beneath it and paint that board either the same color as the chimney or the same color as the surround.

When you say gas insert, to you mean a metal box you insert into the fireplace, or some type of gas logs or gas burning fire. Inserts are necessarily going to decorate the fireplace, rather they are made for efficiency. Gas logs and other gas burning effects can be more decorative, but less efficient. So it might be helpful to clarify which you are planning on installing...and if you have already chosen the gas appliance, it might help to post pictures of it since it will make a big difference in how the overall treatment needs to be done. Here's some examples of a gas insert, gas logs and gas burning fire. Example of gas insert. Notice all the black metal that is necessary to close off the fireplace. This is not a decorative solution, but more for efficiency. This is an example of a gas log with a screen and andirons. This will better preserve the look of the fireplace and provide more decorative appeal, but less heat. Gas burning twigs and black reflective glass. This is a very unique gas burning effect. Not considered an insert, but a gas fire.

I think your fireplace has the correct proportions and looks pretty good . I’m not a fan of the floor tile but you may be able to update the look with accessories.. like plants .

It’s mostly the floor tile I’m not sure about. My husband also thought we should just leave as is. I thought about painting to match the wall?

And yes, it’s is a perfect cool spot for the pup! 😁

Your FP style leans traditional and Colonial. If that is the style of your home I would advise you to leave it as is. It looks just fine.

Look at your room as a whole and not individual features. Yes it would be better if the hearth either matched the brick or was a single slab of marble.

The only thing that seems off is the hearth tile. Can't envision the rest of your space or the home style, but I'd replace the hearth (floor tile), with a small solid slab...maybe black granite (could get a remnant for that). Keep it simple...brick, black granite and traditional surround. The mantel and surround is classic and I'd leave it if it fits with the style of the home.

I don't care for the floor tile. I'm not a fan of the brick with that wall color - but that's not a good enough reason to change it. The size of the hearth is bugging me. It seems too small for the fireplace - i would prefer it to be at least one row of tiles more and the same width as the legs of the mantle.
