4th What's up with you?

We were supposed to go to our cabin at the Russian River this last weekend for my sister's 75th, but hubby's back was a mess and the hill would do us both in!

My 2 sisters went and though there was no water festival, the fireman's chicken BBQ sold out! Over 500 meals sold! (This is a town of about 1,100!)

We'll be going to see the twins and bringing fresh pesto and greenbeans for our contribution.

Oh! So sorry about the pains, but happy for the fire fighters. happy backyard fun!

We're doing something similar, but no fireworks. Way too much fire danger—it's illegal. We can see the local show from my bathtub, but without the smell of burning gunpowder and bugs and sea wet air, what's the point? We're having a while-still-light-out weenie roast. Apparently my group are really excited for an excuse to eat hotdogs. Some red, white and blue decor, guacamole, corn on the cob, my new bigger little barbecue, bean salad, coleslaw, ketchup, mustard, kimchi, scallions, brownies, ice cream, apricots. No actual cooking (everything is already cooked except the corn), just some warming. Lots of time for laughs, and we can go inside if it gets cold.

Tiffy, those milkweed just seeded in that one spot about 15 years ago and i never got around to pulling them out or moving them. Then my son and daughter who where 15 and 10 at the time, spotted the caterpillars on them. 10 year old daughter knew what they where and that was the end of moving them. I have just left that clump to seed and do as it pleases every year. and the monarchs sure love them. If my poppy seedlings, from seeds from the one in the pics, turn out half as beautiful, i will have nothing to complain about. Karen, I can't wait till end of July or early August either. I want home grown toms so badly right now. We've just gone into some heat and humidity again so it's hard to tell if they really will be later than past years yet. On the other hand, I have no complaints about continuing to pick ripe tomatoes when those that bought their plants are pitching them after labor day. I'm still in heaven picking mine. Last year the fall was so warm I picked my last ripe toms on halloween and then took off all the green ones and brought them into ripen indoors. booberry, I've been companion planting marigolds with my tomato plants both in pots and in the ground for 28 years and my grandfather did it with his 100 tomato plants on the veggie farm and he never had a bug problem in his career and I have never either, except for last year. One little tiny tim didn't get a marigold because of the tiny pot i put it in. that poor plant got the dreaded tomato horn worm on it. non of the others did. Didn't make that mistake this year. tiny tim is in a bigger pot and has it's own little marigold in there with it. I also companion plant 4 o'clocks around my plants that are favorites of the japanese beetle and I've never had a destructive season with them, the 4 o'clock leaves get nibbled and the japanese beetles die. the leaves are poisonous to them. i find tons of dead ones around the leaves they nibbled and i guess the message goes out to the others to leave my yard alone, it's a death sentence. All you pepperheads are soo blessed. My one huge desire this year, other than for Italian roasting peppers, was for poblanos and my worst fear came true, mislabled pepper plants. What was supposed to be was a couple of poblanos turned out to be Aneheims. That's part of the beauty of raising your own seedlings, you know what you're getting. However, as long as I can make Chili Rellanos with them, I'll still be a happy camper. Anyway, on today's menu from the garden will be sweet corn picked just before dinner time, NY Strips with roasted garlic butter from garden garlic. (I'm definately off my vegetarian kick.) Then, a tomato, green pepper and cucumber salad. I was surprised I've been having tomatos for a couple of weeks now, but that due only to a few large tom plants I bought for starters. hammerl, thanks! I would love hosta rock princess. Not to brag, but wait until you see the gorgeous iris I will bring. They are in bloom now and doing exceptionally well this year. I will look for some agastache. Every year they have self-seeded, but last year I dead-headed them early because of the stink-bugs. Ruthie, my caryopteris died this year. Not sure why, because I did wait until spring to cut them back, I know they are like lavender that way. Are they just naturally short-lived? Want even more german iris :-)? I spent hundreds of dollars on them initially, getting the latest and fanciest from a specialty iris farm in California. In order to get my money's worth, I give lots away every year so others can enjoy them. Last year I gave lots to Tara, so hopefully we'll see them in her garden this year. For a long time I was in an "iris phase". (now it's lilies and clematis) I will also have dahlias tomorrow. These are the swans. They look like ugly, mis-shapen potatoes today, but I promise they turn into care-free blossom heavy beauties by late July. I have only just started planting mine, so it is definitely not too late to plant them. Keep that in mind when you look at the grungy paper bags they come in. Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow!

CG - I've tried the shrimp in those grill woks, grates, etc. and also right on the grill (Virco). I've decided I like directly on the grill better as there is less surface area to rub off any marinades, etc. I simply turn them once with tongs. Works great and removes 1 more item from cleanup. BSBBQ - I saw a commercial for Johnsonville brats. They say to boil them in beer with chopped/sliced onion and a pat of butter for 12 minutes - then finish on the grill. I'm going to try this but not sure what the butter part would add. Probably coats them a bit to help create a skin/glaze or something when on the grill? I'm now changing this thread to "What DID you cook up on the 4th". :)

In my neighborhood, we have a predicted high of 72°, but it is supposed to get down to 68° by 7PM, which is cool but not too cold.

However, we did our BBQ last weekend and are not doing anything today. I'm leaving on Wednesday to go to the desert and will be there for 3-4 weeks, depending on how long it takes to get things done. I still don't know when my kitchen cabinets will be ready there, but I hope they get installed before my niece arrives in Palm Springs the last week of August.

Doing nothing in way of celebration. With my mom gone this year, holidays just are not the priority they were before. She was the hostess with the mostest.

Plus I have to get up early tomorrow for work. I'm in bed by 10pm and local fireworks usually don't even start until after 9pm. Plus it's too freaking hot to be standing or sitting around outside.

Very jealous of those in areas with cooler temps.

Nothing today. Or at all really. My sister had her 4th of July celebration on the 2nd for some reason. I did not attend the actual party because I was working. But I was pressed into service. I went to her house the day before and made some food for her. Mac and Cheese of course, Potato Salad, Olive bread, chip dip and buffalo chicken dip. I also instructed one of her oldest sons on how to roll the buffalo dip into eggrolls and fry them since that has to be done last minute. He was a star pupil and they turned out perfect I am told.

I am working tonight so no plans. SO went to spend time with his family and I slept all day. I hope I will be able to see some fireworks. Someone around here usually sets them off and I can stand outside my office building and see them. But its raining so maybe not. I would rather it rain all night, my poor plants need it.

carolb So sorry about your Mom's passing! We have found our family coming together in honor of our parents' passing! Cooking the same meals we remembered, passing that on to the younger ones, playing the same dorky games, teaching the younger ones how to pick veges and prepare them. It's bittersweet.
