What are you all grilling on this special day?

Were keeping it simple today, burgers and dogs. Maybe some Italian sausages and some beer brats. Oh.... and of course the official grilling beverage, some beer!

Do you cook the brats in beer prior to grilling? If so, do you use just beer or beer and other spices, etc in the pot? For some reason, I've never done that before. Does it make a big difference?

My DH & I are DJing a car show all weekend. Tonight I'm baking car-shaped cakes for chances & bread for a bake sale. We've volunteered at car shows ever since we first got together 14 years ago. We have games for the kids & adults, contests, rod jousting, a burnout competition, trophies & a dance in the evenings. We have a 1960 Chrysler Imperial & a 1960 Austin Healey Sprite (both unfinished) & an 03 Dodge Caravan with painted flames. We'll go to our city park to watch the fireworks (50% chance of rain here). Some years, we have fireworks at the car show. Have fun Karyn, I keep forgetting to get your stamps. We have a Jack Nicholson golf course at Rocky Gap State Park, maybe your husband would like to play there & we could visit. Golf = boring to me, too. Linda

Although it seems like a forgiving dough - I can taste that I cheated on the overnight ferment. Sorry your casserole dishes aren't big enough. I bake in a toaster oven so when my bread rises it burns on top. Another reason P a L'A is good - it spreads out more than up. I brush the bread with some slightly salty water right before it goes in the oven. But I lose that lovely floury rustic surface. Do you have a pizza stone? That helped me get a better crust back when I last had an oven - now I use it in my grill to make pitas. Also I read somewhere or another about using a SS restaurant dish lid as a cloche though I've never seen one large enough. I am currently jealously watching a neighbor build a stone wood-fired bread oven by his pond - the ultimate bread oven. He says he will advise me when I am ready to build one - and I definitely do not lack for rocks. However right now my 'yard' is festooned with logs, brush and firewood piles. Hopefully in the near future the logs will become a woodshed and I can move the firewood inside. Then maybe a bread oven - which will entail moving rocks. I'm tired just thinking about it all. Making some tea and toast and taking a nap.

Rusty, the heat here is atrocious too, and I have quarter sized tomatoes on the vine that I just keep sprinkling, hoping I'll get some ripe ones when it's time. MagicLand, my local farm market, says the first corn will be ready next week, so it's coming along. The kids had chocolate crepes with strawberries and whipped cream for breakfast with Grandma. We tried to add blueberries for "red, white and blue", but they looked terrible and the local ones aren't ready yet, so we had red and white and pretended that the Hershey's syrup was blue and we were color blind, LOL. Thanks, Jasdip, and in honor of Canada Day, we had peameal bacon sandwiches for supper, I had a couple of big pork loins that had been brining since Saturday, and I sliced and packaged them today for the freezer, so we had a couple of "fresh" slices. I've never seen peameal bacon anywhere except Canada. We had mocha shakes to go with the peameal sandwiches, vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup blended with coffee. Not very much coffee for Bud and Makayla, more for Ashley, Amanda and I. Madison got a couple of bites of vanilla ice cream but she didn't like the coldness. We spent most of the day in the pool, it was 97F by about 3 pm and my house isn't air conditioned, so we all just hung around, getting into and out of the pool and letting Madison nap in the shade of the lilac bushes. @Sueb20 what books are you reading? Any good? I just had a week at the beach and came home Saturday morning. D17 was able to come for a few days then went home with Dh midweek to work, and Dh had an unavoidable/unexpected business meeting in Atlanta. My sons both had to work so it ended up being a vacation mostly for myself! It was actually quite nice. The weather was absolutely perfect. Nothing exciting planned today. Another beautiful day. I was up early and took one of my dogs for a long walk. Dh is smoking a pork butt so we will have pulled pork, corn on cob and potato salad for dinner, We can walk to the end of our block to see the city fireworks tonight out over the bay. D23 flew from her home in San Diego to a wedding outside of Denver over the weekend. No line at security in SD and no flight issues on the way to Denver. They fly back to SD tonight so fingers crossed they have no problems getting home.

I haven't either! I just buy the "Johnsonville" brand of Beer Brats. But, that sounds interesting, I will have to try that sometime.

Beer Butt Chicken and it was sooooo moist and delicious, along with grilled corn, fried okra, and fresh pineapple.

Dessert, made ice cream in a bag. Lots of fun, and yummy!!!

Probably nothing today. I'm postponing my weekend bbqing to Saturday, when the relatives can make it for a combined mother/cousin birthday party. Then I plan on roasting a 14 lb fresh turkey on the Virco rotisserie. I'm looking through the Better Homes and Gardens BBQ cookbook for hints on a suitable overnight marinade. In the past I've found that a cajun seasoning works just fine, along with some garlic cloves and fresh oregano and tarragon rub inside and out.

Cold sesame noodles and jumbo shrimp. I marinated the shripm for about an hour in some peanut sesame sauce I bought at Costco. Then I cooked a pound of linguine and chilled it in ice water. I got the Virco super hot with one of those perforated frying pans and cooked the shrimp.

I poured some of the peanut sauce into the chilled and drained pasta and added the hot cooked shrimp on top doused with some freshly grated parmesan and hot pepper flakes on the side. God bless America!!!

CG - I've tried the shrimp in those grill woks, grates, etc. and also right on the grill (Virco). I've decided I like directly on the grill better as there is less surface area to rub off any marinades, etc. I simply turn them once with tongs. Works great and removes 1 more item from cleanup.

BSBBQ - I saw a commercial for Johnsonville brats. They say to boil them in beer with chopped/sliced onion and a pat of butter for 12 minutes - then finish on the grill. I'm going to try this but not sure what the butter part would add. Probably coats them a bit to help create a skin/glaze or something when on the grill?

I'm now changing this thread to "What DID you cook up on the 4th". :)
