We are the GO-TO, but fridge is out!

Daughter has in-laws coming in from Colorado for several days to meet the new baby, and hoping to have a nice Father's Day picnic and host them here and there.

Trouble is, the fridge went out! Not repairable! New one isn't available until Wednesday!

We had hoped that they would stay down the block at a newly re-done cottage Air B&B, but they chose a local hotel instead.

I guess I'll be making a potato salad and fruit salad and taking it over to my daughter's house to be refrigerated. We'll order sandwiches from a local deli.

Not my favorite way to welcome new relatives from out of town! (we've only met them once or twice during the wedding stuff)

The delivery guy showed up a little early! And the installers showed up 1/2 hour late! Because of our 1914 house's small entry to the kitchen, they didn't just have to take the doors off of the fridge, they had to basically disassemble all of the drawers and reassemble them!

Normally, they said it would take about an hour to install ($200). It took 2.5 hours! $500+! Jeeeze!

Oh well, probably the last time we buy one!

Side note, the delayed Father's Day picnic with the out of town relatives went just great! We found a park with a shady area, light breeze, happy baby.

We ordered deli sandwiches, I made my tater salad, which went over great, some fruit, beverages...a couple of hours and all was well!

The next day was 104*!

Ugh. That's how it always happens isn't it? The air conditioner goes out in mid July. The dishwasher dies on Thanksgiving. The water heater goes out when you have houseguests. And the fridge goes out when you're planning a feast.

Less than a week to get a fridge is amazing though! It took me 2 months to get a new fridge, and when it came it was damaged, and they said the couldn't get me another one. I had to go pick put another one, pay the difference, and it took another month and a half to get THAT one delivered.

Get two big ice chest cooler, and lots of dry ice in one and ice in the other.

I completely agree with everything Fran just said and more. I have been watching this amazing woman for three years now juggle family, job and this tremendous plant sale. She goes to work at 4:30 AM at Costco and then sells plants when she gets done work until she needs to go home and take care of her two youngest children. She is instilling a sense of community service in her children - they all participate from potting plants, growing seeds, painting pots and selling plants. The are a wonderful family! What was gratifying to see this year was the volume of repeat customers and referrals. So many people said "you don't have to tell me - I've been coming here for years", "I come every year to support you (Michelle) and the Childrens' Hospital". New for me at least were the non Costco members who found out about the crazy plant lady from Costco members who bought from her before and recommended them to buy from Michelle. The network is also expanding so hopefully more people will volunteer to help Michelle and her family. I can't say enough about how much effort Michelle and her family put in to making this event a huge success and she deserves every ounce of credit for its accomplishments. It is an honor and pleasure for me to be associated with Michelle and her family in this endeavor.

Dang Nabit!!! The P-trap is easy. Just tighten a bit more. Not too much if plastic, you can strip it. The DW is going to be either the fill or the drain. The fill should have a cutoff under the sink: turn off the water. This again may be a connection that needs to be tightened down a little more. The drain on the KA is just a hose, but it has a clamp on the pump/motor end and another at the airgap (do you have one of these?) or the GD end. (I assume the first time it drained you heard/saw the water going through the GD?) In terms of 'high loop' (and no airgap) the hose needs to be mounted so that there is a high point in the line somewhere. It connects to a short section of hose at the bottom of the washer with a provided clamp. Maybe the clamp is missing or is in the wrong place. Anyway, this isn't rocket science and you need perhaps someone else to look at it. A plumber is not necessary, perhaps just a handyman. Or someone else who knows which end of a screwdriver and pliers are to be used in this instance.

A few more updates.. Within the last couple of days, two sapodilla seeds have sprouted, and just today, I saw that two of the Peruvian apple cacti had sprouted, but they were right behind the plant tag, and I didn't see them until moving the tag. I've also got some white pitaya (dragon fruit) seedlings that have been sprouting over the last week or so. I'd all but gave up on many of these things, but I guess there is some hope for things that haven't sprouted so far. Still hoping for some A. Reticulata, A. Squamosa, Mexican cream guavas, purple star apple, blackberry jam fruit, phalsa berries, and jujubes that I'd recently planted (after cracking the shell and soaking in hot water for several days, with several water changes) from a seedling tree I had. So far, I've also had 4 out of the 7 chestnut seeds sprout. So, the final number that will have sprouted will be between 4 and 7. I'll probably propagate them in larger numbers next season, as long as I can verify the type and where they were grown. If nothing else, I could use them as rootstock for grafting. Lastly, I planted out the new unframed no-till (back to Eden) raised bed with two cassava plants and five sweet potato plants. I'll probably go back in after all of this rain and flooding and fill in the area with peanuts as well. It has a higher sand content than any of my other beds.

Go-to paint colors (non-white) for a space without a lot of light?

Hah! I have tried to have a white room for many years and always get sick of it. Because of the high ceilings and beams this space is very hard to paint so we just stick with what was there when we bought it. I love grey and have BM Smoke Embers in my living room in my other house but that room gets a ton of light and the grey looks very elegant. This space is a lot more rustic and I think a grey might be gloomy unless it was the perfect shade. We painted two rooms in yellows...the laundry and one of the bedrooms..in this same house and they really came to life. I might need something warm.

Some gas stations have dry ice.

You could also check Freecycle and Craigslist, and Nextdoor, plus any locals. There might a an old fridge your daughter can just plunk down, not necessarily installed in the kitchen, which will do in the meantime. I'm sure dealing with the new baby and everything else without a fridge is a hassel too.

Or maybe one of their neighbors has an air b&b which they can use for fridge and entertaining? Have they talked to the in-laws? Maybe they'd be happy to switch to an air b&b or suites hotel, to help out,

I rented a fridge in a similar circumstance from a furniture rental place (it arrived within 2 hours) if there is one in your town. I don't know if Baskin and Robbins Ice cream is a national chain, but I buy dry ice there. Check with other ice creameries, too. $15 a week for the rental is all, but it was a few years ago.

I know where to get dry ice. The freezer and center refrigerator drawer are still working. Bought a dorm fridge to get us through. I'll make tater salad and put it in daughter's working fridge. Bought our new awesome fridge from a guy who used to do scratch and dent stuff, but has great discounted stuff (with warrantys), just couldn't get the delivery til Wednesday.

Wow that's one expensive fridge delivery. I guess everything's expensive right now. Life is an adventure these days... an expensive one.

Glad the picnic went well. In my opinion you can't go wrong with deli sandwiches. Personally I prefer it on rye bread and that's another thing you can get it on the bread you like generally speaking.

Of course you had to mention potato salad. Glad your people liked it. Now I want potato salad. Luckily I have potatoes :-).
