Build in the Fridge or Counter Depth??
Comments (17)I have a standard size refrigerator next to the wall of my pantry closet (which is 24" deep). On the other side I have some standard 24" deep lower cabinets and an upper cabinet. I pulled the cabinets out 2.5 inches (we were constrained by a doorway) and I have a 28" deep counter there (since there is a 1.5 inch overhang). The upper cabinet is 15" deep. The refrigerator is boxed in with panels which are 30" deep (so only 2 inches past the counter). The refrigerator sits in this box such that the door is the only thing outside of the box (so the door opens fully). You cannot see the sides of the fridge but you do see the sides of the refrigerator door. The cabinet above the refrigerator is the standard 24" deep but it is also pulled out so that the front is flush with the front of the fridge box. The one other thing is that my fridge is actually only 33" wide (it was our old one which still works well). But the fridge box is 36" wide...we have some trim pieces all around so that the fridge looks built in. When we replace the fridge later, we can remove these trim pieces and install a 36" wide full size fridge. Here is a pic...it's hard to see that the fridge box is actually 2 inches deeper than the counter next to it. Comments (9)Sincere thanks to everyone who posted threads and pics to help the spatially challenged! Sombreuil and Cawfeegirl, your kitchens are beautiful! The wall into which our fridge would have to be recessed is on the exterior of the house, and we live in a pretty cold climate, so the whole concept may be a non-starter. We may have to make the style of handle a bigger issue than something like that should ever be, just trying not to protrude any further than necessary. Either that, or it's back to the drawing board to reconfigure the design yet again!...See MoreFinal decision. Integrated fridge flush with counter or cab?
Comments (7)Charliehorse.... Meaning that the fridge and run of cabinets immediately adjacent will all be aligned in one flush row. The countertop will overhang the base cabinets and stick out past the fridge. The other option is having the cabinets recessed from the fridge to allow the countertop to die into the side of the fridge. Fori - I just assumed that wouldn't be a problem bc of the number of pictures I have seen, but you make an excellent point....I should certainly check ! Does anyone have pictures of an ogee edge that dies into fridge? Thanks!...See MoreUpper cabinets stick out past wall chimney bump out
Comments (33)My greater discomfort is that my existing full size fridge on the other side of the kitchen is going to stick out until we can afford a counter depth version in a year or two. That's where you might want to bump out the base cabinets (if possible). Deeper countertops are great but will be more expensive. If that wall is a straight run of cabinets (no corners), bumping out the base cabinets would be easy to do with the bonus of not having to replace the refrigerator....See MoreH202
