Porch Light and Fan Help!

Hello Houzz, We recently moved and are making some exterior improvements to our 1920s home. I’m looking to replace the porch ceiling fan and front door light, but am overwhelmed by the options. Hoping for some help narrowing things down. This store was recommended to us by the folks we have coming to do the work - https://www.seagulllightingstore.com/

For the fan - I’m thinking minimal and white in hopes of it simply blending into the white ceiling of the porch. I’m adding photos of the ones I’m looking at here as well as the links. I don’t know if I should do one with a light or not…

I think a lantern style would be good for the light fixture.

While I agree with white fans in some circumstances (the two I bought last year were white), I think in this instance more of a design statement would be appropriate. Houzz published an article on fans recently:

The fan that is there now is much too large for the space, fans made now are so efficient even in the smaller size. I would be looking for a 42-44 white fan with no light, and a remote. That online lighting store is nothing you cant order anywhere, and they do not have enough selection.

This is a great fan with good blade pitch to actually move air, I sold a lot of these, and they are still in the line. https://www.lampsplus.com/products/30-inch-kichler-canfield-white-indoor-outdoor-ceiling-fan-with-pull-chain__k9883.html yes its small but it is mighty. I promise, and you can add a remote if you like.

We found a couple of mission styled fans on Lamps Plus, but the color was not the same as the light fixture, and I guess that begged the question .. which is more important? Style, Color .. We don't need it to match exactly, but we don't want it to be odd either.. Would this fan go with the Light fixture above? Here is a link that might be useful: MIssion Fan

I would pull a sheet of plywood down, remove the old fixture and try to run that wire next to the door. With the ceiling open you can then run a wire from the first light to the second. A new piece of plywood and some paint and the old fixture hole is gone.

So, an update: we decided to skip the ceiling fans after all. The only ones we liked were about $450 a piece, plus installation, and we'd need at least three. And we'd probably only use them about 15 days a year in this climate. So we're going to get a couple of nice stand fans instead. OTOH...we did wind up with can lights on a dimmer switch. Sigh.

We have recessed lights and a plain ceiling fan on our covered porch. The lights are on a dimmer and we use them all the time, because we are on our porch a ton at night. If you are having electrical work done for the fan, maybe you can price recessed lights? If not, I’d probably search high aNd low for a fan with unobtrusive, subtle lights.

I love porch ceilings painted blue like the sky . I agree the fan can be smaller and still do the job. I think a lantern type light could work but I need to know how high the ceiling is there .Is that a storm door or your actual entry door?I think the house numbers are too small to read until you are on the porch so maybe see if you can fix that too. Maybe a nice set on the fence for instance.

Those articles are super helpful and now I know a lot more about ceiling fans. I would love to do a lantern style light but unfortunately the porch ceiling is only 8.5/9 feet tall.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - it is like you are reading my mind! I want to paint the porch ceiling blue and replace the house numbers!! Do you have a blue paint that you like? Sources for new house numbers?

The ceiling height of the porch is 8.5/9 feet and yes we have a storm door there too. So I think I have to stick with a flush mount light though I love the look of the lantern lights.
