Ceiling Light or Ceiling Fan/Light Combo
Comments (3)I have the combo units in each bedroom and I would call them area lighting, not accent. They are convenient to use when you enter the room and want a light on so you can get in and out quickly, but you will still need table or floor lamps for task lighting. I would install them again, but not spend very much on the light itself. You could also install switched outlets, but I have found that arrangement seems to confuse guests (and sometimes spouses). You must have the light itself and the wall switch both on, and one or the other always seems to be off. Using the small ceiling light on the fan seems like its more foolproof. Comments (1)I recommend fan / light combo's. I am addicted to fans, while my husband is a big "overhead light in the middle of the room" guy. If you have 8' ceilings, take care where they are placed with relationship to the bed. If you have kids who jump, or while making the bed, light / fan could be damaged because the combo does take up a fair amount of space coming down from ceiling. Please do not consider what you see "in the stores" to be anywhere near what the market bears. And fan quality of those could give you big headaches down the road. We are in NoVA, and completed our construction late 2011. We dealt with Dominion Electric (I just looked, they have store near you (Laurel & Baltimore). I highly recommend. Our rep here was honest, and made recommendations based on our needs, and budget, also steered us away from companies who might be having issues just now, or parts / warranty issues in future. We found that one of the big box stores carried same line of lighting. We ordered sample from one of the BB stores, so we could just see it, and return it. Later, when we ordered the actual piece to be installed in our home, we found that D.E. prices were actually lower than the big box. So don't think they are higher. Plus, if you are building, there might be 'builder's discount', but you should ask on that. dominionelectric-dot-com. I do not work for them. But we found that of all the vendors during home construction, these were in top 3 of being wonderful to deal with, issue free, and honest. Good luck!!...See Moreceiling fan size, screened porch
Comments (6)Thanks so much for the ideas. Jasper, I don't know if you are the same Jasper but if you were the Jasper who posted your screened porch pictures on your yahoo site, we used your porch as a guide to what we wanted. The resemblance of the rear of our houses are uncanny ..even the same grey siding. I loved your porch. Ours isn't as high off the ground as yours and we are adding a 6x6 deck for the gas grill. I will try to post a photo. so you can see. Thanks again for the link! pozj...See MoreCeiling Fan - Low Front Porch Ceiling
Comments (3)Just move your plate heigth up a foot or so. You could cut through the roof to install a 2x12 beam on top of the plate. This will put the facia higher than the existing facia. Or you could move the beams in & give yourself a bigger overhang on the porch so the facia meets. Dropping the floor a step is always an option as you mentioned. Al...See Morededtired
