I have lights. I rarely use them but was thinking recently that I might use them more if I had a dimmer. As long as you’re doing it I’d get lights to have the option.

No light on our patio ceiling fan, but we do have recessed lights in the ceiling out there. Is that a possibility for you? I don't turn them on often, but they are nice to have when needed.

Good point, 3katz. I don’t have Tim use them if I don’t like them and a dimmer is a good idea.

Ida, unfortunately there isn’t enough depth to install Recessed lights, but that must be nice.

We have recessed lights and a plain ceiling fan on our covered porch. The lights are on a dimmer and we use them all the time, because we are on our porch a ton at night. If you are having electrical work done for the fan, maybe you can price recessed lights? If not, I’d probably search high aNd low for a fan with unobtrusive, subtle lights.

It’s easy enough to have a light with the fan. But do include a dimmer switch.

You should be able to put sconces on the wall, if you need light, and these could be on a dimmer. You can have a cord cover, if you do not want to install a J-box in the wall.

I recently replaced the ceiling fan on my porch. I did not want a light . I found this Hunter outdoor hugger-type fan on build.com. It was around $125. I believe there was an optional add on light kit available.

We didn't add a light but that's because we have other recessed ceiling lights on the porch so didn't need it and prefer the shallower fan without them.

Thanks everyone. Lots of good information. I will need to think about how often I would actually use the lights, although there’s no harm in having them for occasional use. The ceiling is half vaulted which adds another consideration.
