Kitchen floor - wood tile or grey?

I have wood floor throughout my house. We are redoing the kitchen. My husband wants tile and truth be told i dont want to go through the staining process of trying to match and the smell - since we live here. We are deciding between a grey/slate type of tile or a wood look tile. I cant find good examples of a transition. anyone have any? I think the wood tile next to wood floor may be weird but wanted to see. or if anyone has a good example of a transition to grey. Kitchen will be mainly white and counter will be white with grey veining

I find it interesting when people say gray is out. They never seem to show what they have in their own space that would be better.

All one has to do is google new built multimillion dollar in the NYC suburbs. Hard pressed to find a kitchen that not gray and white. But...I digress.

I agree with Patricia. I like gray and have it in my newly renovated Florida home.

If you like gray, use it. That said, I wouldn't use gray wood look next to really hardwood.

There are so many tiles to choose from. I love a large format gray herringbone.

Gray is on its way out and good riddance. I wouldn’t use gray in a permanent fixture like tile.

If you do wood-look tile next to real wood, make sure to choose a waaay different color so it doesn’t look like you tried to match and failed.

I have Pergo laminate flooring in my kitchen that was discontinued. So, when I replaced my entraceway hall flooring (that leads into my kitchen), I chose Italian porcelain woodlook tile. My carpenter made a simple oak transition piece between the two floorings.

Thank you! They are Conestoga cabs, the blue is SW Commodore (they go off the SW colors), they really are not *that* bright. :) I'm from NY too Audrey! When it came time for the backsplash I waived the white flag financially and decision making-wise. I love the water jet cut tiles a la Ann Sacks and such. I think they would look lovely with what you are talking about. Light blue or green are pretty. If you want to stick with white maybe milk white glass in a staggered brick pattern (not subway tile, they are different sized rectangles, I think I saw them at Tile Bar) But I do love me some subway tile. ;)

Thinking on this but my first thought is not to do black cabinets. And, don't worry about "floor fatigue" so much. It's not like you'll be standing for hours in a kitchen like a restaurant chef. I have porcelain wood look tile and I don't notice the "fatigue" of a hard floor. It always looks best to have the flooring the same throughout so nix the idea of changing the flooring from the living space/kitchen space. The floor plan you show is too small to see details. I'm thinking if you are going concrete floor, mix the cabinets with natural wood look and a light counter...maybe a white quartz.

I think your idea would be great, but being miss practicality I am concerned about how much it will show dirt. I think it would be lovely (in the right hues- not the example you posted which is too gold at least on my screen- but will definitely take a different direction than your original inspiration photo. So much more serene, but stunning.

So, continuing the wood flooring and putting a warm tone in means either the white tile with brown veins or going with hardwood but keeping it more oak than grey? Of the wood stains (attached), does that mean that I should do, for example, the natural oak over the driftwood or stone grey? Stone grey is what I had planned for the rest of the house. I have lots of natural south facing light which is why I am not worried about it being cold. Thankful for your thoughts!

Sorry to hijack your thread but I agree that gray is not a good choice. Unless you are going very dark for a slate-like look.

IMO gray is not going out if you like all cool colors than grays are always going to work . But I do not like wood look tile and IMO already dated but honestly the best choice would be to match the wood floors or a simple 12 x24 porcelain tile no pattern at all in a color that works with the kitchen and the rest of the flooring .. If you post pictures of what you have already you will get better help.

Real slate or Daltile’s porcelain look alike Delegate would be your best bet to transition. Charcoal. Most gray will clash.

Definitely, no fake wood next to real wood. Gray in the proper setting is fine, it is not going away but it needs to be chosen carefully to compliment the surroundings. And still no wood look next to real wood. Personally I do not like gray floors but that is me.

If you must have gray, look for a slate color. Love what eld6161 posted.

I have gray slate next to wood. It's actual slate (I like fake stone only slightly more than fake wood) and it's been performing well. You do have to vet your slates carefully. Some are more stain resistant and some may flake.

I put a gray slate look porcelain tile in my master bath last year (bedroom has wood floors) and I love it. I wouldn't install gray LVP or stain wood floors gray right now because that is certainly a dying trend, but real slate or a convincing porcelain slate look has a lot more longevity. I would certainly choose it over putting a wood-look tile next to a real wood floor. Friends of ours did that last year when they remodeled their kitchen and I don't care for it.

Thank you all. I do like that grey tile color pictured above by @eld6161. I feel like too dark will make my kitchen look smaller. @kculbers What brand/spec is that? It looks great. I don't have a great picture to show because it's going to all be redone. My hardwood floors are red oak right now. Cabinets will be white.

Don't put faux wood next to real wood. Get a stone looking tile instead, it will look way better. Vinyl, porcelain, anything, as long as it doesn't try to mimic wood. It will look so much better and you won't have to worry about matching.

As far as color goes, slate grey is fine. Grey wood is trendy, but grey tile is timeless.
