Like Nancy, it's cool and partly cloudy here. I should be weeding, mowing and weed whacking. But instead I'm just oohing and aahing over daylily blooms and photographing them.

Yoga Man ffo - This one is not as blue as purported - at least not yet. I woudl call the eye and edge a blue lavender. I got this a year ago, and it's just now blooming.

Lightning Round ffo - This has not increased since I got it last year - still only one fan.

Absolute Ripper - Scapes are really short after last year having reached 34 inches tall.

Clown Parade is well-budded this year, despite the lack of May rain.

Cutting Loose - This is the best bloom I've had in two years. Scapes are still very, very short - in the teens.

Seedling Perseus' Sandals x Jumping Jack Flash towering over Aerial Applique. It's not usually quite this dark. Low overnight temps must be responsible.

Seedling Cexy Samantha X Bubblegum Delicious 2 started blooming today. It has five scapes, and all five had flowers open. Here's a single, and here's the clump. Six inch bloom on a 26 inch scape. I took so many pictures of this one today.

How pretty! Difficuklt to choose as I like them all but Yoga Man does appeal. Also Perseus' Sandals x Jumping Jack Flash is very striking, but Cexy Samantha X Bubblegum Delicious 2 is so pretty in a clump and singly.

Kay - I do like the huge patterned eye on Yoga Man. I'm happy that it has at least 15 buds. That's pretty good for a new one in my garden. Thanks for the comments on the seedlings!

This is just personal experience, although I seem to recall others reporting the same thing. When a young squash is only starting to produce females, it is still quite frail to produce viable fruit. If your largest leaves are only about 6" long, the plant is too young to support the fruit even if the weather is right and you have both male and female flowers. It's as though the plant hasn't had its first period and so it can't get preggers even if there has been major reproductive action (like yellow and black striped bees or buff-coloured bees). My first half dozen females all aborted. The flowers dried out, dropped and the baby zuke shriveled up and rotted. I, too, was alarmed by this the first time, but so far, this has been my experience with all four zukes I've had, and they all ended up producing. The information on plants not being able to support multiple fruit is valuable. I think zukes often start out looking like there is a production problem when there really isn't. It's one of those plants that takes a little patience. It's good to ask questions, but if you have squash that isn't behaving as you expected, it is best to give it some time. As long as the squash doesn't have any funky symptoms, like discoloration of leaves, spots and blotches or funky weird bugs on leaves or close to the main stem near the ground, patience is usually the best medicine.

A Bit OT: Do You Cut and or Dry Your Flowers For Bouquets?

Catkin, I agree that an outdoor, in the shade, bouquet is great to have. My favorite feature is that the bees continue to visit the flowers that way. I didn't know they'd last for weeks though, I have got to give that a try. Great tip! My most reliable flowers for cutting are: Rudbeckia hirta - these last for 2 weeks in a vase! Scabiosa caucasica - good long stems, I cut it when the center hasn't opened yet, they last for 7-10 days. Annual snapdragons, Rocket mix Globe thistle - everyone seems to love this one. It's a PITA in the garden (reseeds) but I keep it due to popular demand. Heuchera flower spikes - just adore the zing that these add, no matter what color you have. tall phlox Russian sage Bennary's Giant zinnias Catananche, aka Cupid's Dart - flower looks like chickory, and the seedpod dries into a little pearly sphere. Looks great either way! Yarrow. Cut it right at the base and strip off all the foliage. Lamb's ears flower spikes, but only if cut before they fully open. Shasta daisies Rocky mountain penstemon Pasqueflower seedheads (fuzzy little puffs - I deliver flower to a hair salon and they go wild over the frizzy hair look) Allium 'purple sensation' Hosta leaves Lady fern fronds Statice - I haven't grown this one in awhile, but it comes in some great, vibrant colors and is pretty fun to grow. It looks like a weed at first though, so don't pull it! Lavender Culinary sage leaves, sometimes flowers too for a bride's bouquet, a trailing vine of clematis is pretty neat. Tulips Daffodils Hyacinth Fringed bleeding heart (dicentra eximia) For my own bouquets were a week + of vase life is not expected, I also use roses, sweet peas, and peonies. I am too stingy to cut things like Siberian Irises or delphinium because they seem too fleeting and rare to cut. Those are my favorites. What are yours?

Susanne your trees are looking good! I’m still waiting to get decent fruit from my Oro blanco tree. So far everything I’ve pulled from it has been dried out and juiceless. I’ve tried picking them early, late, right when they’re supposed to be ripe. I’m hoping this is the year. Here’s some pics of my Oro blanco fruits. And some Rio red grapefruits that’ll be ready in January. You can see a little pink starting behind the leaves. The overall tree Eureka lemons starting to color up. Out of room for pics on this post.

Garden flowers that don't make good cut flowers

My French lilac blooms have no smell at all, and the blossoms are very short lived in vases, so I am waiting for my old fashioned lilac to gain enough mass that I can harvest a few branches from it each year. The only other flowers I've grown that make suitable cut flowers are sunflowers and gladioli. Unless you count the spring wildflowers I place in miniature vases on my kitchen windowsill. Actually I have occasionally picked a sprig off of my bleeding hearts for these same tiny vases, and they last a long time.

Yoga Man is one I started to get last year. I talked myself out of it and fussed at myself since. Sounds like yours is doing good, it certainly looks good. Other daylilies are pretty, but I love your seedling!

Love both of the seedlings, they are at the top of my list today! I love the color of Buddy’s Black Eye with that nice green throat. Absolute Ripper, hmmm, looks like it ’s having a tantrum today, hope it shapes up.

Sherry - Absolute Ripper looks a lot better today than it did yesterday when the blooms were facing downward. I posted this pic because it does not usually have such a pure blue purple color. With our heat, the purple usually has more red tones.

Nancy - So far, Yoga Man is doing better than most of the other new ones I planted last fall. They only have 6-8 buds and are very short. Yoga Man isn't its registered height yet, but it's closer than the other 14 are. Sensational Heart is the only other new one that is the registered height (32 inches). It also has 14-15 buds per scape.

A beautiful bunch of daylilies! it's hard to say which is my favorite. Your two seedlings look great. The Cexy Samantha seedling is making a beautiful clump. Yoga Man is really nice. I usually don't go for whites, but Lightning Round is gorgeous.

Yoga Man gets my vote too! What an eye! Hearts That Care looks to be a very clear red. I see what you mean about Clown Parade’s color being different from mine and Kay’s. Yours looks darker. What gorgeous color on the seedling.

Kate - Yes, Clown Parade is more red here than pink, but I got it from Kay, so I know it's the right plant. I think my soil must cause the difference. Yoga Man seems to be well liked by almost everyone today.

Nan - Lightning Round has a gorgeous flower, but so far I'm disappointed in it for hybridizing. It has total dud pollen. I didn't try to set seed on it last year since it was new. If it doesn't set pods this year, I will be selling it. It's very short in my garden, like so many Floyd Cove intros, and it multiplies slowly for me.
