sharing experiences with rugosas
Comments (16)I have these established rugosas listed by my most favorite for hips, rebloom and hardiness at the top and on down: Magnifica (my best rugosa for rebloom and hips) Fru Dagmar Hastrup (second best, but a close second!) Belle Poitevine (right in there with the top two) Marie Bugnet (love this little rose - unfortunately the stem girdlers do too and rarely leave poor Marie with more than one or two canes.) Martin Frobisher (gotta love a rose that sets such pretty blooms over the whole season yet asks for nothing at all) Mrs. Doreen Pike (if only she'd let go of her spent petals, she'd be a perfect little rose. Love the pink blooms against the apple green foliage.) Carmen (when she's in her spring flush she is awesome! Very little re-bloom the rest of the year.) R.rugosa rubra (I like this rose, but it won't stay home. Suckers badly in every direction!) Therese Bugnet (Not much rebloom from Therese and just like her sister, a regular victim of stem girdlers.) Sweet Cecilia (a bit too tender for my zone; it's hanging on but just barely. Pretty white blooms.) Fimbriata (not too impressive in bloom, ho-hum out of bloom which is usually. Canes only half hardy up here.) Dr. Eckner (definitely longs for a warmer zone, has severe die back and awkward growth thereafter with few blooms that blow in a heartbeat. Needs to be shovel pruned except that it takes up so little space it's easy to ignore!) ** Agnes (I just bought her this year so I haven't ranked her yet - but being a once bloomer doesn't bother me as long as I get *lots* of yellow blooms when she *does* bloom!) The less "rugose" they are by hybridization, the less hardy they are for me plus all of my rugosas are prone to stem girdler which can be most frustrating. As far as blackspot or powdery mildew, I don't think any of them with the exception of Dr. Eckner (which hardly even looks related to rugosas at all) are affected. If it weren't for the stem girdler problem, they'd be pretty care free. They rarely even get fertilized or watered or deadheaded....See MoreRooftop Roses Spring 2022
Comments (37)Seasiderooftop you are so fortunate ! I was going through your beautiful photos again , imagining the taste of home grown grapes , remembering the way living by the water smells - it's been decades ago. I've read about the apostle Paul's shipwreck in Malta but never seen actual pictures of the location, it brings home the realism of the Bible text. Carol, it's such hearty camaraderie to face the thorns of rose love together with someone that has eyes to see. You appreciate rose photos and speak of them as if they were your own cherished roses . It's such an encouraging group here I don't feel so alone in my labor. My old neighbor Bud ( great name huh ) laughed when I told him I wanted to make a rose garden here at the apartments. I remember his stinging words " No one will appreciate them ". It felt a little silly but I used to pick flowers and take them to him. The old guy died last year but the flowers did change his mind. My Evelyn stands in a deep weed patch at another neighbor's flower bed . She orders food by mail and rarely comes out her door. Evelyn's glorious petals fall never being seen by anyone but me, the delivery people and occasional passer by....See MoreDamasks, Portlands/Damask Perpetuals Share 2022
Comments (198)It does seem like summer has arrived for everyone. Hopefully we all get just the weather to enjoy it gardens. Magpie, I love your cover patch. Passive aggressive neighbors and their boring, water hog lawns can mind their own business 😁 our tiny front lawn is under trees and doesn't get clover but it does get overgrown with beautiful, soft, fluffy moss in the winter. Another interloper we're happy with. Biodiversity and gardening for microclimate success! Your bunny picture is just perfect. Beautiful photos Portland Carol! I think this might be my favorite class of roses! I have quite a few babies that I'll enjoy seeing develop in the future. And for a modern rose that's not a damask perpetual but reminds me of one in growth form (lanky, self pegging) and bloom form and fragrance... Gabriel Oak....See MoreMy Rose Garden 2022 Year3
Comments (57)I’m so ready for my peonies to bloom!!! Their season is short but I would not be without them! @kate it was a very warm winter, I have already pruned in February and starting to fertilize now with plant tone. I tend to over fertilize so please don’t listen to me 🤪🤪. I have my schedule saved somewhere but I basically do plant tone and fish fertilizer now, once they are leafed out I start with spray liquid fertilizer (kelp+ maxsea) or something like that whenever I have a chance (every week or 2weeks) If the rose struggled last year I would probably add a slow release fertilizer now too…. This year I will add neem oil and jacks captain to my sprayer to see if I can get thrips under control...See Moreportlandmysteryrose
