What should guide design style with a generic 1990s suburban brick hom

I love the idea of using a home's architecture to guide updates done to it. I feel like this is obvious if you live in a historic home. But what about all these generic 1990s-2000s homes? My home was built in 1994 and seems like a generic American two story brick home. I'd love to update our kitchen with a specific style in mind to guide it but I'm not sure where to start. I love cottage style but is that weird to do a cottage kitchen in my home? Does that make sense? This is more general discussion rather than how it applies to my own home but thought I'd put it out there for all the great design minds to think about!
