Dark stain on unsealed hardwood floor
Comments (0)I noticed a square foot of a dark stain on the hardwood floor in the living room. The floors are many years old in this rental and there is no gloss on them so I'm guessing they're unsealed. I think the stain came from the dog's urine although I have no idea if it did. I think it's been there for quite a while. Any advice on how to get rid of it without sanding the floors? Also, how should I clean these floors. I'm afraid to put any liquid on them....See MoreHardwood floor care tips: area rug & pad, felt pads, how to clean
Comments (4)We are getting our 20 year old hardwoods refinished right now because they are trashed! Here are the "really" bad things we've noticed. Do not push your furniture across the floor! It will leave gouges. Buy tons of felt protective pads in all different sizes and put them on EVERYTHING. You also need to replace them frequently and keep the pads clean (if there is any grit or dirt on the pad the protective pad turns to sandpaper). Put an area rug under the sink/DW and water dispenser to catch drips (and shake and clean under rugs regulary so no dirt is trapped under them). Our kids have plasma cars and they have destroyed the floors so I would say no wheels at all on the floor. Don't push that piano! Swiffers or dust mops are great and help keeping it clean....See MoreBest vac for cleaning hardwood floors & around cabinets?
Comments (61)Thank you Flash407 for bumping this thread back to page 1. Now I've got it bookmarked. One of those things I meant to read but didn't get around to. What a lot of good info. This is better than epinions! :) Have to say I too am sorry about spending $400 on a Dyson, (EVERY time I use it!) for a number of reasons. Strong suction but it ends there. However, mine is not a 'ball', so maybe that one is different. Considered the Roomba, and from what you're all saying it really does sound great, still not sure about the cat reaction though??? The other name coming up again and again seems to be *Miele*. Particularly for the canister vacs for hardwood and kitchens? (The backpack sounds cool but unfortunately my 'back' is beyond that :) Have to go check these Mieles out. Anything has to be better than lugging that Dyson around OR trying to use it's attachments. Speaking of smells...you're all lucky not to live in eastern PA. A new invasive species arrived in a cargo container in 2000, according to Rutgers Univ. in Allentown PA, called the Brown marmorated Stink Bug. They got to my area (just north of Philadelphia) a couple years ago and it's a war zone! Vacumm one of these things and the smell (an oil they can spray) will be everywhere plus in the vacuum itself for days. :(...See Moreblack hardwood floors...how can i keep them clean?
Comments (7)Palinpset-Well, even barefoot it is bad. :( In fact, I think the oils on our feet smudge it worse than shoes. I like the idea of socks others mentioned, but of course it is just not practical all the time. carol-I have considered that it may be the cleaner, so I will try your suggestion. Thanks. nancy-I will also try your product, the Bona X. I have Bella Wood cleaner that the dude from Lumber Liquidators suggested to me. Not sure if that could be the problem, or if it just doesn't clean that well? I will try Bona X! nanny-glad to know I am not alone in this! Thing is, the hair doesn't bother me as much as those darn smudges!!!...See More- last year
