Comments (9)Scarleta- I've had a lot of trouble with aphids in my lighted shelves indoors where I start seedlings. It's all because I foolishly brought some plants back in from outside. Those aphids really get around. Is there some time you can have the greenhouse empty to get rid of them and then never bring any plant inside that has been sitting outside to reinfest them? Perhaps it's harder with a greenhouse since it's outdoors and perhaps the aphids can find ways to get in. There must be some way to control them like Safer's Insecticidal soap or Neem. I also tried soapy water without much success and damaged a few seedlings. Have you tried the real heat-lovers in your greenhouse like okra, watermelons, and cantaloupes? It's not hot enough here to grow them in the ground. You might find lots of good ideas on the greenhouse and structures forum, /strucs. Here is a link discussing peppers. I don't have greenhouse experience to help you. Is yours heated in winter? Do you use it to start seedlings for outdoors, and make cuttings in winter? That's what I do with my lighted shelves but I don't have sufficient light or space to grow tomatoes or peppers to fruiting stage in winter, which would be nice. My peppers don't do well in our cold soil so I have them and eggplants in pots on my deck and they are fruiting and have no signs of aphids. Comments (5)hee hee....my 3-seasons room has sort of evolved and taken on a life of it's own. When I first designed this house, there was going to be a deck off the diningroom, and a deck off the master, both at the back of the house. I was going to put a water garden between them. then I changed it to 2 screened porches. Then I changed it to one large screen porch, 47' long and 14' wide. Then I changed it to double-hung windows instead of screens (now it's turning into a 3 seasons room). It was supposed to be unheated...but we have since decided to add a nice fireplace and an window air-conditioner so it can be a 4-seasons room. Since it's heat and air are independent of the rest of the house, I can leave the windows open for most of the year and enjoy the sounds of nature, but I can easily close them and make the temperature comfortable on the hottest and coldest days. This room is going to be everyone's favorite beause of the view. There is a huge, double opening french door between the dining room and the sun room so for big family dinners we can just open the doors and make the two areas feel like one big area. I LOVE this design!!...See Moreheating 3 season room
Comments (2)My daughter has an enclosed room such as you describe. From memory, it is about 30+/- ft x 12+/- ft, with doors (swing) on each end. There is an overhead fan. Recently, she added a gas stove w/electronic remote ignition. With a cold room, turning the fan on, the stove heats the room in less than 5 minutes (very comfy). Yes, you need to crack open a window. Very nice. V...See MoreHelp me design my 3-seasons room
Comments (5)My wife had a window fashion business, I'm an engineer. I would sometimes get 'roped' into going on complicated sales calls - like 3 season porches. IMO - if not designed into the structure initially, most are white elephants. The addition of the porch makes the adjacent rooms dark. So the people use the sun room, don't use their living room, and many pile boxes of stuff in the living room. Then there is the HVAC problem. It's a bad idea - and in your case the roof will be problematic....See MoreJen Brown
