I ordered a plant of Wonderblue from Klehm's two years ago and it bloomed for the first time this year. The flowers are "bluish" compared to other Lilacs; however, they are not as dark the flower in the photo posted. One thing -- the plant I have produced double flowers. It wasn't the radial doubling typical of Wonderblue, as the extra petals come from the center of each individual flower. I have no idea if it is another (mislabeled) cultivar or a mutation, nor have I contacted Klehm's to ask if they know anything about it. It's also not impossible that this blooming one is a different lilac species from the others you have. "Lilac" as a word tends to cover a suite of species & hybrids from the genus Syringa. The one we tend to grow most is "common lilac" (Syringa vulgaris). There are also quite a few well known cultivated varieties of that species (Mr. Lincoln, Boule de Neige, Beauty of Moscow, Primrose, etc., etc.) However there are other species than S. vulgaris. One of the more famous of those is Korean lilac (Syringa meyeri). In any case, congratulations!

There are so many hybrids that I want just for the name. Lilac Wonder would be one of the ones I would really want to see. There is a beautiful pic of it on Dave's Garden website. The guy who posted the pic described the bloom as raspberry pink. There is another hybrid called 'Honeymoon'. I'm not crazy about that name but it is supposed to have purple-ish tones. It is tough, though because there is no way the flower looks like the promo picture. The John Scheeper's bulb catalog describes the color of this flower as "Deep raspberry-rose with a blue sheen." I love the comments posted with pics at emaryllis.com. He describes Honeymoon as a watermelon pink. Still waiting for the purples. With more than 600 named hybrids and the FAR lower number available each year from mail order, who knows what we're missing. G

They were very helpful with all of my previous questions and concerns though. The 9 other bulbs I got from them were correct. The Walmart bulb was only 2.98, but I'm still sad that it's not pink. I don't have any pink hipps yet. It looked similar to Apple Blossom on the package.
