Windows Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Designing living room windows that are odd size

Excuse the mess because we just moved in but I am trying to decide how to decorate the living windows because the sun is extremely strong in this space and also want to have it feel warm. The windows are 73 inches wide and 45 inches long. They are about 4 feet from the floor. They’re odd size in shape has me going back and worth on design and can’t decided what options will look best. The picture without the ladder will have the TV centered between the two windows. On the right side of The ladder is the entrance into the house.

Would you consider light filtering shades? This should block much of the sun intrusion without losing your view.

I agree with above comment solar shades and then once you have furniture etc. you can decide if you want/need curtain panels

Bumping, but for me, I would do 2 shades. That way each "section" will be even and look more deliberate...the shades will be what people see and I would want 2 the same rather than 3 that are 2 different sizes...

if you want to keep the tray ceilings at least make sure windows line up nicely with them and I would want a lot more windows on that exterior wall. Usually I agree with cpartist, but on the subject of windows in the dining I completely disagree. People sit down for a longer period of time when eating and actually have time to sit and look out windows when dining. Windows there would be a must to me. It’s something that makes sitting down more enjoyable. No windows is just not the same ( I’ve had a house with that and ended up adding some openings in a wall for some natural light, but still nothing interesting to look at As outside changes vs. inside walls tend to be static. A kitchen often needs task lighting to work anyway so as long as a kitchen is well lit and has a good layout where one can see out windows from it I think it is less important overall. Because when working in the kitchen most people work and don’t gaze out the windlows for extended periods of time. Windows are nice for natural light, but less important since good task lighting is essential anyways. That said if one can design a house to take advantage of windows on two sides of a house in an open plan it is more ideal and it seems like you could accomplish this with some rework of the design. Ideally windows should be in every room IMO.

I LOVE all of the ideas of Design Interior South. I think the two sofas, back to back look great! Just think, you can have your morning coffee on your loveseat, looking out of your large window, enjoying both the view and your coffee. I would do outside mount roman shades, mounting them in the wall space above the window. A soft linen shade would soften the room and add a nice texture.

If solar shades fit with your style they are functionally better. The problem with roman shades is that they're either up or down, open or closed. If you don't control the light coming in somehow, the sun will bleach your furnishings and discolor your wood floors in a fairly short period of time. Unless you got new windows with a UV coating? That being said, inside mounted solar shades in combination with an outside mount roman shade is the best of both worlds and would give you privacy at night. However, then you're talking real money. If there is a retailer in your area that sells window treatments go and look at everything that is available and get price quotes. It's a competitive business so I have found them to be surprisingly competitive with online sellers.

What is your style? I agree that solar shades is the cleanest look (inside mount). They're beautiful, and you can choose how opaque you want them to be.

White solar shades cut the glare while keeping the room somewhat bright. They are better for keeping out the heat, but are not as good for TV watching.

Black solar shades are better for TV watching, and might look better with your black frame windows. They are not quite as good at keeping out the heat if that's a concern (but still ok-- better than nothing).

However, if sun beams directly hit your eyes from where you're sitting, you are going to need something opaque. When angled slightly open, blinds will completely shield you from the glare while still letting some light in. They have decreased in popularity, but they are SO practical. I love them. I think real wood blinds are a classic look that works for many different kinds of decor.

The biggest downside though is that for large windows, they can be heavy and a little bulky when raised all the way up. If you think you're going to have them down all the time, then that's not an issue.

Thank you! I like both options are only issue is finding ones in the size. At this point they may need to be customized to fit.
