What's the coldest you left potted citrus out with ill effects? H
Comments (13)I know exactly how you feel; I've been there before. But you already know (in the back of your mind) it doesn't really matter what we've experienced ;-) Different container sizes, materials, times of year, and the rest of micro-climate influence is too great to be helpful enough to answer your question. Oh yeah, rootstock is kind of important too! Mike you are correct and worrying about the right things. WLD may not be an issue for just one day, but root-loss is. The soil temp gauge is your best friend in these times. If you determine the container soil temp differential between ambient air temps, it should give you a good idea. If you want to be on the absolute safest side, don't let em get below 55. But IME they can get down as low as 40 and not die... heck I let one get to 35 (which I'll never do again) and it didn't *completely* die. To answer your question, I've lost orange and mandarin trees on C-32/C-35 rootstock with unprotected plastic 16"-20" containers in the gritty mix when ambient temps went to 28F. Other *unprotected* citrus trees did fine that year were: * on Trifoliate rootstock, best overall compared to Citrange and hybrids. * in over-sized containers, ie. the roots were not grown to the outer container edges. * in bagged soil, whereas gritty mix suffered more. I covered the foliage that year, not the containers. Although all the above trees "did fine" they did not thrive with the first growth flush, which should've been the biggest. It took half the growing season for them to act like healthy citrus again. Those which I protected the containers all did excellent and never seemed to languish. Looking at your trees and the excellent care you provide them, you want to stay around that 50+ range =) It's just not worth the disappointing and frustrating remainder of the year caring for plants that look so much worse than they could. I've done it! Why not buy some bubble wrap and put it around your trees containers. A lot easier than lugging plants inside. Just watch high-end peak temps ;-) It wraps back up nicely and re-usable. Hope your trees do great!...See MoreFavorite source for really nice comforters... NOT duvet covers!
Comments (19)I've had good luck with Croscill bedding. I still have a comforter/skirt/shams I bought in the early 90's. (I'm picky about bedding patterns & fabric. Love that set, won't get rid of it, but tucked it into a duvet cover in guest room for a different look. Even after laundering as much as I do it's in great shape.) Last a long time, doesn't shrink or fade (whatever I bought was machine washable, like to clean my comforters frequently and don't want a whopping annual dry cleaning bill.). I'm not into shiny fabrics, so last time I did the MBR nothing from Croscill appealed to me. Most of their stock was shiny fabrics, but that was several years back. Some sources: Penney's; Bed Bath Beyond, Tuesday Morning (surprisingly good selection but you have to keep checking their shipments), occasionally TJ Maxx or Marshalls, maybe Macy's (can't remember). In the Midwest Carson Pirie Scott Dept store carries them and they are owned by Bon-Ton, so the same stock is carried under different regional dept store names. Chains operated by Bon-Ton include Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, Parisian, and Younkers....See MoreOrganic solution to fight black spot : myth or effective?
Comments (34)jjpeace (zone 5 US/zone 6 Can), thank you for the additional information. Particularly: " BS is a problem for me in late summer, mainly late august" I sometimes/often had put into my posts in threads like this that I got blackspot at the end of the season in what was then a 1000 no spray rose bed, but I was not concerned as I suspect that it is part of Nature's way of helping my roses prepare for winter. If you feel that your blackspot is appearing too early (are some of the rose leaves turning red, are other plants/trees starting to lose their leaves?) then I suggest that you try to determine what could be weakening your plants immune system at that time. Such as: are they not getting enough water or sunlight? There are external ways to help boost a roses immune system. The use of commercial harpin type products or salicylic acid type products (such as aspirin) come to mind. This link leads to a general background article which may be useful concerning boosting a plant's immune system: http://horttech.ashspublications.org/content/15/3/518.full.pdf Your PDF find command can locate specific places where the word rose appears....See MoreWhat color curtains and curtain rod to use w/rug & black furniture?
