Have you looked at TJ Maxx/Marshall's/Homegoods?

macy's has a bunch and they seam to go on sale every few weeks so wait for the sale if you find one you like. I purchased a martha stewart one at 50% off about a year ago and it is holding up very well.

Just as an FYI...a "duvet" is the comforter....the cover is just that a cover.
A really nice comforter will usually be down, and solid color, needing a cover if you want tohave a "decorator" look.
If you get a "down alternative"...AKA Dacron...it will last only as long as the cover does, or until you get sick of the design.
If you buy a duvet and gar a cover, it will last for 30 years and more and you can change out the cover....but I agree...it's a pain washing the duvet cover and replacing the duvet in it.
If you are willing to replace the whole thing when it gets "tired"...The home Decorating store carries lovely stuff! They have Waverly, Ralph Lauren and all the rest.....at good prices.

JC Penney is where I bought my comforter with matching shams and Euro Shams. They had a great selection a few years ago and are always having coupons with free shipping as well as sales. I usually buy online and return at the store until I find what I want.

I've had good luck with Croscill bedding. I still have a comforter/skirt/shams I bought in the early 90's. (I'm picky about bedding patterns & fabric. Love that set, won't get rid of it, but tucked it into a duvet cover in guest room for a different look. Even after laundering as much as I do it's in great shape.) Last a long time, doesn't shrink or fade (whatever I bought was machine washable, like to clean my comforters frequently and don't want a whopping annual dry cleaning bill.). I'm not into shiny fabrics, so last time I did the MBR nothing from Croscill appealed to me. Most of their stock was shiny fabrics, but that was several years back. Some sources: Penney's; Bed Bath Beyond, Tuesday Morning (surprisingly good selection but you have to keep checking their shipments), occasionally TJ Maxx or Marshalls, maybe Macy's (can't remember). In the Midwest Carson Pirie Scott Dept store carries them and they are owned by Bon-Ton, so the same stock is carried under different regional dept store names. Chains operated by Bon-Ton include Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, Parisian, and Younkers.

I have a great experience with the Rose Tree outlet on ebay and their online store. I've never been a "change with the seasone" kind of gal but I am now. Bought a couple of sets I really like for very reasonable price for the quality.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Rose Tree -- never heard of til now -- looks like some good options! I also love Pine Cone Hill, going to check their site too although I thought they were mainly duvets. Will look, though.

True, no comforters, but Pine Cone Hill has some really pretty quilts; you could layer a warm blanket and sheet under the quilt and it would probably work, although not as simple as just the single comforter but may be worth the extra effort.
