Dee-Lish or Mademoiselle, which one do you like better?

My Dee-Lish bushes have bloom troubles. They're doing a lot of petal edge crisping in the heat. Would Mademoiselle perform better as far as crisping goes, and otherwise, is she comparable to Dee-Lish regarding disease resistance and winter hardiness? How about Michelangelo as an alternative to Dee-Lish?

Oh so sorry to hear dee-lish crisping in the heat. I just placed my order last weekend😂. Sweet Mademoiselle is doing amazing in the heat! Mine is own root from heirloom last October, and planted in full sun. The photo below is how it looks like after two days in 95F. Not affected by the heat at all. Now it's my top 1 favorite rose. I cannot believe a 1st year rose is doing so well. No disease no thrips (thrips are happily living in my garden). She is the only reason I am looking for more Meilland roses.

I have both, prefer SM. as deelish blooms look miserable in the heat. They both bloom well. SM does not last long. Roses that withstand 90+ temps, Zaide ( fantastic, prolific, healthy, vigorous), Beverly, munstead wood, poets wife, sol desire, lady Ashe, Florentina, grande Amore and Maurice utrillo. Every other rose turns crispy

kmcg: Thanks for the recommendation for euroshams. I was thinking of checking out TM for the pillows. shee: No worries on hyjacking since we've been helping one another make our final choices. It's fun as we're going in different directions so when I shop, I'm always also mentally looking what works for you. I agree with Dee, the pickstitch quilt looked heavier--with that I don't think you'd need your velux. That would be my concern as well with one of the threads getting caught on something and breaking. The way it was used was more for a blanket and I've also seen it folded down at the bottom of the bed so matelasse may be better option. I must've overlooked the olive matelasse from Kohl's that kmcg recommended for you. As I had mentioned on your thread, I have two very different matelasses in my home: mine is very soft and I intend to keep using with the new bedding. It's the perfect weight for summer and something my DH can use without tossing all the covers on top of me because they are too hot! I find I want the thicker, lighter and snuggly feel of the comforter for winter, though. My plan is to pull down the comorter in summer and and just sleep with the sheet/matelasse (DH usually only wants the sheet, on all but hottest days, I like both) and use the comforter and matelasse in winter (possibly a down blanket also--did I mention I like to be warm? Menapause and hot flashes have not affected me yet). The organic matelasse one I bought for my DD from The Company Store is very heavy, stiff; but I bought it as it was minimally processed and my DD had been having problems with eczema. I keep it as a set of travel bedding which she sometimes brings when we stay in hotels as she had been having reactions to the hotel bedding--now problem is a bit less. scanmike: Thank you for sharing your experience with the linen/blend. It does have a different look/feel to it. I like the juxtaposition of the elegant/sophisticated print with the more rustic look of the linen. I'll be sure to post pics when they arrive. Yeah!

Carol, I don't think you could go wrong with Dee-Lish. Its ADR designation should make it an unlikely black spotter. It's too soon to report on BS on my Dee-Lish, and I do spray, but I plan to test DL and pass over it when spraying its neighbors to see what happens. It could be quite winter hardy, obviously irrelevant for you since you container grow your roses, but for me it's critical. You know, I am finding ADR roses for the most part are about as BS proof as the Knock Outs, but winter hardiness is very variable from variety to variety. I believe the test gardens in Germany on average range between zone 6 and 7, and the roses tested, again I only suspect this, could be grafted, so winter hardiness could be partially attributable to being grafted also, not just based upon on the scion's winter hardy attributes. Grown own root, the ADR winners could be less winter hardy. This point, I need to further investigate. My Earth Angel is a wonder: no blackspot, no winter kill without any protection, great flowers and scent. My Pink Enchantment, black spot free, dies to the ground WITH winter protection. Could it not die back over winter in Germany's warmer zone test gardens, but dies back big time in my colder zone garden? Both Earth Angel and Pink Enchantment are ADR winners. Both of mine survived this very mild winter. There was some dieback on both, but not much. A consistent snow cover would have been better. Both have grown and leafed out and set buds, but too early for blooms. The new growth is distinguishable because it is deep red and shiny. I'll be thrilled if they're as floriferous as last year. I need this deeper pink in my garden. The color is just a little deeper than Leo da Vinci. Moses' recommendations never fail. Mr. Moses, if you're reading here, welcome back. You won't know what to do with yourself, having been in pain for so long. I'm praying for the speediest recovery on record, and the best gardening year so far!

I lovr my Deelish and have lots of picsnof it. The rose on the left is Roseraie de Chatelet and it is a pink similar to my Olivia Rose Austin. you can see that Delish is much warmer and deeper, but not brash. in thus picture you csn also see the range if pinks with Earth Song back and to the right. This also shows how Deelish’s color ages. The topmost bloom is sn older Deelish and the smokiness others mentioned adds a lavender cast as the blooms age… especially in cooler weather. Here she is during different parts of the season.

This thread so reminds me why location is so important. I don’t have Sweet Madamoiselle but my Deelish is in full sun here and does great-no crisping.

However my full sun and others full sun are completely different situations

KJ, your Mademoiselle is a beauty. Happy to know it is not a, 'crisper,' for you in CA, which would strongly suggest equal petal integrity here in Pittsburgh, PA. What's worst about my Dee-Lish dilemma is that I have four of them, and replacing them all at once would put a big gap in my one and only rose bed. I did notice from the beginning that my first D-L did petal crisp, but the bush otherwise proved to be black spot resistant and pretty vigorous....then there's the fragrance, wow! However now, the crisping is getting increasingly annoying.

Oursteelers, location is everything as you say. My micro climate garden is heat drenched, mercilessly hot, full sun from 10:00AM - 4:00PM, with partial shade a couple hours before and after this period. It is also nestled in between neighboring, heat retaining/radiating commercial buildings in a very old, gentrified neighborhood, my home, smack dab in the center of my block, being the only one left in my block, every other home has been converted to businesses/offices. Otherwise, Pittsburgh is not known for desert hot garden conditions.

I have 2 Dee-lish and 1 Sweet M. as own-roots. The Dee-lish in partial shade does better than the Dee-lish in full-sun. Sweet M. is fantastic in partial shade (only 4 hrs. or morning sun), Sweet M. lasts longer in the vase than Dee-lish, so I suspect its thick petals would take hot sun better.

Munstead Wood crisps in full sun. I need to put sticky wet clay on Munstead Wood to UP its moisture-retention. Dee-lish's leaves are a bit more glossy than Sweet M, and my experience with glossy leaves: they are water-hogs and do better with soaking wet clay.

Below is my 2nd Dee-lish in full sun in August. Its ability to handle full sun improves as it matured in its 8th-year.

Sweet M as 3rd year own-root took up more space than Savannah. Sweet M. is 6' x 4' in late fall. Sweet M. with dull leaves is more heat tolerant than both Savannah and Dee-lish (both have glossy leaves).

Beware of Sweet M. as 3rd-year own-root: Color can be gaudy if high-phosphorus fertilizer is used. I stop using chicken manure after seeing its color changing from nice pink to gaudy orange. Below is nicer pink in my alkaline & dense clay:

@strawchicago z5 I agree with the color. I saw SM last year at a nursery. It was so gaudy that it almost looked like plastic flowers. But i heard a lot of good reviews here so i just got one recently. I have Deelish too but it is her first year so i cant comment yet. i saw deelish at our local rose garden last summer though. I remember the edges didnt burn but the flowers had significantly less petals. Our summer is close to 100F every day.
