One negative of a 2015 Speed Queen FL

So far, we very much like our "new" 2015 vintage Speed Queen front load machine. But we discovered one small problem, and perhaps it relates to another question I had.

We've found two times now, that a sock can get trapped behind the door seal boot and not get spun out with the rest of the load.

The other point was that I noticed that the identical model to ours, but a later vintage 2017/2018 had a rubber gasket/seal/ring around the outer tub just behind the door seal. I wonder if that seal was an ongoing improvement attempt to prevent just this issue?

Maybe it's not an "ongoing improvement" and ours is just missing this seal but that seems unlikely.

Anyone else have a 2015 model without the black rubber seal?

Anyone else have the occasional sock trapped behind the door seal?

FWIW, small ankle-height and 1/4 crew socks and other small items landing on top but not behind or under the rubber gasket is common with both FL washers I have owned, and it doesn't get spun out. I have never had one slip down (disappear) between, as if it is going under the tub and into the drum. They just sit all soggy wet on top of the 3-4"wide gasket.

This happened occasionally (not often) with my Miele and happens occasionally (not often) with my SQ FL I bought in December.

Cavimum: Mine is the one on the bottom - no black rubber gasket, but a longer train of drain holes. Yes, so far it's only been the shortie socks, but it has happened twice and it always gets lodged between the back side of the door seal "boot" and the drain holes. I wondered if that black ring thingie on the outer drum helps prevent this?

The laundrymat I've been going to just installed a bunch of new speed queen FL machines and since I'm in the market for a W/D I've been trying them out with a critical eye. Other than the coin slots it looks the same as the ones sold for residential use. They seem to wash well but one issue I've had is it seems that the door opening is too big for the depth of the drum. It's not really deep as FL go. I know it sounds wierd to say it might be better if the opening were smaller but... my clothes tend to fall out as I load it (especially things like sheets) and I can't get as many clothes in there as I can with the smaller machines they have at the laundrymat that have smaller openings. Now that all said it probably wouldn't be as much of a problem if I owned it since I'd be more worried about overloading and not trying to get the biggest bang for the buck. One nice thing, it looks like, from the SQ website that the controls can be placed on the bottom of the dryer for stacking.

Seems to use a reasonable amount of water, as you can always see it sloshing around in the drum. Every so often, there are some fabrics or items that seem to retain the detergent suds more than other loads. Then it is a simple matter to flip the "extra rinse" switch on. For a bulky sleeping bag, for instance, we've learned to use the extra rinse, since we don't like any detergent perfumes to remain in the bag. The machine controls are so basic, however, that you must remember to flip the "extra rinse" option off for the next load as it does not reset to a "default" off setting. To counter that, we developed the habit of scanning ALL the control settings (as in all three; big deal) prior to walking away from the machine. Simple, but effective.

Electronic controls are far more reliable than mechanical controls. But like everything if designed poorly they will fail prematurely. All automobiles and commercial aircraft today are fly by wire and are loaded with electronic controls. Just think anti-locking breaks, solid state ignitions, fuel injection, and automatic transmissions and we don't think about reliability. Speed Queen increased their warranty by two years with units that have electronic controls. That should say something about their faith in electronic control reliability. Even the dome membrane keypad used is typically rated for at 1 million keystrokes and the good ones are rated at over 10 million keystrokes. And I know Speed Queen has been using electronic controls for years in their Horizon series commercial washers used in laundry mats that I am sure see far more abuse than home use would subject these machines to.

boba1, Nice to see all the talk about FL Speed Queens these last several months, Speed Queen was wise to bring it back and not discontinue it as it's a quality machine. Regarding your question...The Speed Queen is sitting packed up in it's original box in the cellar for the last three years as the Bosch is still running as new after the bearing replacement. I would not like worrying about small items (and think about baby and toddler socks, which are even smaller) getting back behind the gasket (a/k/a boot) and in fromt of drain holes on a washer. Maybe a mesh laundry bag would be the best solution. IIRC, i used one for baby socks when our granddaughter was very young and I had to wash her entire outfit immediately :-p after a bad diaper leak on the days I kept her.

FWIW, i just now Googled the problem and its not just SQ FLs. Lots of pics and solutions. Always socks. LOL .

All my life i would hear people talk about washers "eating socks" when everyone had TLs. It never happened to us. I guess we were lucky.

The tenants at one of my neighbor's rental properties reported the washer provided there was not draining. I found a small bootie-type sock jammed in the pump, belonged to one of her teenage sons -- gross overloading led to it going over edge of the drum ... of a toploader.

Another tenant has twice in 3 years reported "suds" fault and failure to spin on the Whirlpool frontloader provided at that property. I found in both instances a sock (and other gunk) clogging the pump protector/filter.

Yes, now that I've perused the net, it looks like it's a problem with many brands/models of FL washers. TL too, but as Dadoes says it must take some serious overloading of a TL washer to lose a sock!
