While dusting....do you ever?
Comments (9)I live in the same house my parents lived in a few years before they both passed,Mom has been gone 17 years, my dad has been gone 16 years. It was a home they rented for about 5 years, We purchased the home after they were both gone. We have done major remodling on the home and lots of landscaping. When my folks lived there I know it was a happy time for them, they loved the house, and Mom especially loved the yard and garden. I often feel them in the house, and especially Mom when I am doing yard work. Maybe it sounds strange, but it gives me comfort. I feel they are looking down with approval, and appreciation. Our loved ones are never far away...See MoreNew Mattress Shopping: Almost as Stressful as Car Shopping!!
Comments (21)Timely discussion for me... I am in a major dispute with Raymour & Flanigan - big furniture and mattress chain in the northeast. I am 60, the hips are getting sore, my old mattress was old so I decided to buy new. Went to all the "mattress" chains, hoping not to spend more than $600ish. Went to Raymour and I walked out with a $1300 mattress. Almost immediately the mattress started to shift each night so that when I woke in the AM I had to be carefull not to fall of the edge on my bum (which I had done a few times). I thought maybe it was the risers, so I took those out. Thought maybe the sheets were too large. I Bought about 5 different styles of sheets - no change. So they send a service guy and he tells me I need to buy something to put between the boxspring and mattress. Told him I needed to talk with someone higher up, quickly. Regional office calls, they said all twins will shift. Said maybe I was to "big" for a twin, even after I explained I had been sleeping on a twin for over 20 years. If fact I gave my old mattress to my adult boy and he has been sleeping on it just fine. My main argument of course, was that if "all twins will shift" as she stated, I should have been told this at point of sale. So now I am talking to people on the corporate level. Waiting to see what they say. Will keep you informed. What I will say is that you really should listen to your friends as to what they do or don't like about their beds. Do research online, and when you do go to choose don't just lay on the bed for 5 min and say "okay, this is great" - and look at this like buying a car. Awful but necessary. BTW they were also trying to sell me on the gel bed. Too new on the market for me....See MoreHave you ever had an intruder in your home?
Comments (25)Years ago when i lived in NJ,someone came into my apt about 3 in the morning.Just my baby son and i were home.DH was in the Marines and overseas at the time.I was also pregnant about 6 mos. DS and i were both asleep, and i woke up when i heard someone open the door and come down the hall.I was thinking DH came home early, til i heard them flip the light switch in DS's room, and DH knew that i didn't have his light set up to come on with that switch.I jumped up in bed,and as i did so this big man came into the room.I glanced around for something to defend myself ,but there was nothing. So in a very calm voice,i said who are you and what are you doing in here!! He said nothing, just stood there.I said you better get the hell out of here right now,i'm calling the cops.He started walking back down the hall and i then noticed that he hadn't closed the door when he came in,and his keys were still in the lock.As he got towards the door i went to the phone in the kitchen as the hall forked off into a "Y",to the kitchen or the front door He went out the door, and i went out right behind him and started banging on the next door neighbors door. They opened the door and i fell apart. Neighbors DH took off bare feet and all after the guy,but he had dissappeared into the night. They told me they heard me talking and they also thought DH had come home. They called my sister and my BIL came and got me and ds and took us to their home for the rest of the weekend. The next morning my BIL took me to the housing office and reported, they were sooooooooooooooo unconcerned, said,oh it was probably just the old tenent, and he forgot he didn't live there anymore.SO BIL told them to change the locks before i came home and add a chain lock or another kind of lock as well. They had the nerve to tell him they couldn't add a second lock, their policy.BIL told him then he would, because it wasn't against his policy. I was and still am amazed at how calm i stayed while he was in my apt.But it scared the crap out of me. Kathi...See Morecar shopping: have you ever gone w/dealer financing?
Comments (11)I'm proud to say I've only financed one vehicle in my life. My first new truck and I got a loan from the bank (the dealer was pulling stunts) for 9 months and paid it off in 5 or 6. I probably should have waited a little while and paid cash for it, but was anxious to get it. Ever since, I've paid cash for every vehicle, new and used. As said, your credit usually needs to be pristine to qualify so be sure to check it and of course, get it in writing! I note you're only financing about 1/4. How long would it take to pay for the whole thing? Depending on the vehicle issues, I'm assuming repair costs would be outrageous? Otherwise repair might still be a good option, or you could just buy a beater to last a while. Couple cautions are to get it in writing before hand and read it thoroughly, at least a couple times. Read it with a skeptical eye, don't assume anything. Look at it as how can they screw me, for things like upping the rate, penalties and the like. See what happens if you pay late. Maybe you never will but it could happen. One late payment can cost hundreds or more in a bad contract. Another thing to watch for is the infamous "Ford add-on" as it's known around here. Ford dealers seem to be the worst, but others do it too. They sell you a vehicle, tie you up a few days "getting it ready", etc, and then when you go to pick it up, won't sell it to you at the agreed price or they change the terms (finance through them, different down payment, different interest rate, etc). "They made a mistake" is the usual line and they can't sell it to you for that. Won't give you a signed contract up front - they "hold the paperwork" until you pick it up. They tried to force my cousin to finance through them or add $1200 to the price and would be required to wait a minimum of a year to pay it off and there'd be a charge to do it. My cousin (an avid Ford loyalist) told them to pound sand and left. They called in a few days to try to get him to do it, he wouldn't, and they wouldn't budge so he told them to leave it sit on the lot and he went and bought a Subaru. Shortly after, my vet got hit for $1500 but didn't want to hassle with dealing with more car jockeys so she paid it. And those are just two examples. Watch for last second add-ons, substituting a different vehicle and other price increases. As vala55 pointed out, much depends on the dealer so if they're slimy, beware, if they're reputable, things could go well. I wouldn't automatically eliminate a dealer finance if I was forced to finance....See Morepetalique
