Oh my gosh. That made the hair stand up on my arms! That is so scary.

I used to worry about break ins but when I bought my home, I got an adult dog from the pound. Jake is my protector and has a vicious bark.

That's so scary. Thank goodness your neighbor wasn't injured, or worse.

I've had my home burgularized, but it was never broken into while I was there.

My aunt gets migraine headaches. One Sunday morning she was getting dressed to go to church. She had her purse on the counter in the kitchen right by the back door so she could pick it up on the way out. She got a headache and told her dh to go on without her. She went to the bedroom to lie down and slept til her dh got home from church. When he got there the lock on the kitchen door was broke and her purse was missing.

I worry some about crime. We are just minutes from Memphis and crime is rampant there. It has picked up here in our town, but it's not bad. I hope and pray it stays relatively crime free.

We've had someone come in , but in the afternoon while no one was home...

They took all of Denny's guns except the black powder guns, (police said black powder guns are no good on the street.)

They knew where we kept our cash stash.

Found out later that a ?friend? of our son's told some guys he knew that were breaking into homes where to find the stuff.

My cousin Shirley once heard some cellophane rattling...She got up and walked out of her bedroom and found a man going through her purse. She started swinging things to hit him with, and yelling for him to get out.

He said "Calm down lady..I was just looking for an address" or something like that...She chased him outside screaming and yelling at him..he took off. She lived alone..She was lucky.

That is so scary. It gave me goosebumps. The thought of someone standing at the end of my bed when I'm sleeping just freaks me out. We do not sleep with the windows open and we leave outside lights on and have some sensor lights too. We also have five dogs and they would bark if anyone came near.

One Dec 23rd several years ago, some young men tried to break into several houses on our street. They broke the screen door trying to get into the glass patio doors, where our tree was piled high with presents. They finally entered the house next dooor as they had left the door from the garage to the house unlocked. At that, the family woke up, my daughter heard them laughing and we got up. They had been into another house on the street and left a pair of women's shoes, of all things. They were long gone by the time the police arrived.

I haven't had anyone come in while I was at home, but that scares me to death to even think of something like that. I am alone most of the time. I do have a pistol and everyone who knows me, knows they had better not just walk in.

A couple of months ago, we had some bulldozer work done here.
The man who did it, works with his 29 year old stepdaughter.

I was gone one day while they were here, but my husband was here. Next day I noticed some pain pills I had were missing. Actually, not all of them....there were 3 out of 15 left. I told my husband I thought she took them, and he said no, she couldn't have because she was always out there with them where they were working. I think she came in to use the bathroom and saw them and took them.

Anyway, her boyfriend is the son of my husband's best friend and he took her on a trip and she she stole his medication....he just had knee surgery. He said she left him 5 and took the rest of the bottle. Now my husband believes me.

After she stole my medicine, I was here one day and she came over. I think she was surprised to see me here. She acted like she came by to get my husband's phone number....I forget why she said she needed or who needed it. Anyway, she said, "Do you know Jody's phone number?" I said,"I've been married to him for 42 years, yeah...I think I know his
phone number."

I've got her number too, and she had better keep her butt off my property. She just got out of rehab for being addicted to pills. Looks like that was a waste of time and money.

Yes. Years and years ago I came home to a burgled apartment. I was about 21 and had absolutely nothing to steal. They took the pennies from my penny jar. I'm just glad I wasn't home.
Another time my dog chased off someone trying to get in the window.
I've chased off car boosters from our carport here.
Someone's made an attempt to get into our apartment, but we have a steel frame door...they work.
I have a golf club by the bed and by the front door.
Ah, such is life in the big city.

Scary. A good reason to always have a little yappy dog or a big one that barks.

When we bought our house in 1981, we didn't change the locks. About three months after we moved in, we came home to find the front door open. There were signs someone had been thru the house, doors and drawers open. But nothing missing. We called the police, who walked around, found nothing, wrote up a report, and left. We guessed it was one of the children of the prior owner. We changed the locks after that!

We have 4 big dogs, so no, no intruders or burglars.

Your neighbor lady was really lucky nothing worse happened to her. That's so scary.

No and I hope I never have such an experience. Since I live way out in the country quite a distance from neighbors, that is one of my fears. We have the whole house on a security system with First Alert and I set it every night. Also got a good barker that acts as an alarm. Elvira has quite a deep bark for such a small dog.

That is also why I hate hot weather, I don't feel secure with the windows open. I never sleep well and am jumpy all night.

Years ago a young man high on drugs got my house confused w/ his and tried to break in. My neighbor saw him, and came over and talked to him and called the police. He was high as a kite. Anyway, I was young and my children were young and he did scare me badly!!

I've never had anything like that happen. I can't imagine how it would feel to know that someone had been in the bedroom. Creepy!

I've learned to open windows from the top. Not only lets the cool air in, but lets the hot air (that rises to the top) out. I doubt that anyone would try to climb in through the top half of a window.

Years ago when i lived in NJ,someone came into my apt about 3 in the morning.Just my baby son and i were home.DH was in the Marines and overseas at the time.I was also pregnant about 6 mos.

DS and i were both asleep,and i woke up when i heard someone open the door and come down the hall.I was thinking DH came home early,til i heard them flip the light switch in DS's room,and DH knew that i didn't have his light set up to come on with that switch.I jumped up in bed,and as i did so this big man came into the room.I glanced around for something to defend myself ,but there was nothing.
So in a very calm voice,i said who are you and what are you doing in here!! He said nothing,just stood there.I said you better get the hell out of here right now,i'm calling the cops.He started walking back down the hall and i then noticed that he hadn't closed the door when he came in,and his keys were still in the lock.As he got towards the door i went to the phone in the kitchen as the hall forked off into a "Y",to the kitchen or the front door

He went out the door,and i went out right behind him and started banging on the next door neighbors door.They opened the door and i fell apart. Neighbors DH took off bare feet and all after the guy,but he had dissappeared into the night.

They told me they heard me talking and they also thought DH had come home.They called my sister and my BIL came and got me and ds and took us to their home for the rest of the weekend.

The next morning my BIL took me to the housing office and reported,they were sooooooooooooooo unconcerned,said,oh it was probably just the old tenent,and he forgot he didn't live there anymore.SO BIL told them to change the locks before i came home and add a chain lock or another kind of lock as well.They had the nerve to tell him they couldn't add a second lock,their policy.BIL told him then he would,because it wasn't against his policy.

I was and still am amazed at how calm i stayed while he was in my apt.But it scared the crap out of me.

This past Spring I was out in the back, doing some yard work...When I heard a car door shut and assumed someone drove up...checked the front, didn't see a car, so back to working...With the new subdivision! directly behind us and one beside us!...and so much traffic, it's not easy to know what sounds are coming from where...Later, I found the side door, that leads out to the carport, pushed completely open...Called our 3 inside cats' names...One came out in the hall and just stood there looking at me, the other 2 were hid.
About 2 weeks later...DH went to church, leaving the side door unlocked, I stayed home...Here, in what I call my junk/computer room...Later, I heard the door open, and the cat's scattered here and there...I thought they were playing...Sometimes, the church service doesn't last a full hour...I glanced at the clock...I cannot see down the hall from where I'm sitting...so I called out, 'Hey, church service ended 15 minutes early today?!'... No answer...I heard footsteps and I thought DH went to the hall bathroom...I heard the side door slam shut...sometimes if it's windy, it will do that when you're shutting it...Thinking the quietness odd, , I got up, expecting that he just sit down in his recliner...Maybe I hadn't heard his answer...I looked out, noone was there (?)...5 minutes later, DH drove up.
We have had lot's of things outside stolen ...We had 'thought' moving from town to a semi-rural area, there would be less stolen items...20 years ago, this was considered a very nice area to live...(and we had privacy)...A policeman told DH that there are 2 guys who live about a mile from us, on another road, that break into houses. They walk everywhere or ask for rides.Hmmmmm.

A week ago my DS & hubby came home from an overnight outing, to find the side door of their house smashed in. Their new TV and othe electronics were missing and the whole house ransacked. My sister has a real temper and she said she wished she had been home when the %#$$##$ broke in. To give you an idea of her temper and personality, her nickname is Taz.....for tazmanian devil. I told her from what I hear of so many home-invasions, I'm thankful they were not home. Things can be replaced, but my Sister and brother-in-law can not. Dottie

Here's a true story. It happened in our home town.

A girl woke up one night to find a naked man standing at the foot of her bed. She screamed, he ran, she called the cops and they caught him. He got 30 days.

After 30 days were up she woke up again and the same naked man is at the foot of her bed. She called the cops again. They didn't catch him but by this time knew it was the same guy. This time he's sentenced to boot camp.

Third time the same girl wakes up and the same nutjob is naked at the foot of her bed. This time he was sent to prison. He said he "loved" her and she doesn't even know this man! Now that would terrify me!

They make screens that have some kind og alarm wire imbedded into the screen part. maybe she could get them for the windows that stay open at night. I think they are pricy but it would be worth the peace of mind and may still be less than having A/C installed.

Unless you mean inlaws, then no. Thank goodness!

We've had our garage broken into when we were away from home, but never the house. I spent years alone with the kids while DH traveled and often heard things that go bump in the night. I rarely slept well.

I can't believe anyone sleeps with windows open on the first floor. Criminals look for easy opportunity, leaving windows open and doors unlocked really is foolish.

A serial murderer entered a home in my hometown through an unlocked door. Luckily the parents heard their teenage daughter crying and they were able to apprehend him. If he had taped her mouth (or they'd been more sound sleepers), she would have been dead.

When my father in law is at work, it appears that no one is home, since he has their only vehicle. One day his wife was in the shower, when she heard the doorbell ring twice. The front door was locked, so she assumed it was a solicitor who would just leave. Then heard the front door being pried open, and someone entered before she had time to dash out of the bathroom and get to a phone. She thought that the intruder probably heard the shower running when they entered the house and realized that someone was home. She dedided it might be worse if they knew she'd heard them enter. So she stayed in the shower, since they could have a weapon and were closer to her than she was to a phone. She began singing in a loud voice, to appear as if she had no knowledge of an intruder.

Thankfully it worked and the person quickly took a few things from surrounding rooms, but never entered the bathroom. She continued singing in the shower until she heard them exit the house and then jumped out and called 911. The police told her that under the circumstances, she acted wisely. A man was picked up in the neighbourhood and he was carrying her stolen items, along with a gun. He told the police that he was not even going to show his gun unless he needed to use it as a threat, but this hadn't been necessary since the homeowner had never confronted him. It was a hair raising experience, so they got a large dog and she now brings a cordless phone into the bathroom when she takes a shower!
