I have found planning my wardrobe exactly as you are is perfect. I list out my needs and decide what to have based on those.

Seems super easy for men, since their going out outfits are low key anyway, one great suit, one or two blazers, three or four nice shirts, two pairs of linen or cotton twill trousers for the summer, two pairs of wool gabardine for all year and most needs for being presentable are covered. Don't forget a nice coat for evenings out.

After that it's a matter of how you want to dress on a daily basis.

I have a large wardrobe because of my work and because I like clothes, my husband just really wants to be presentable....I think he has 20 some golf shirts and shorts, 19 pairs of khakis or casual pants, a suit and two blazers, along with three dress shirts. What does he wear most days....athletic pants and an athletic type shirt. He looks cute!

We need to get those clothes to the local church closet.

I’d keep any of those golf shirts that are nice, unfaded, and fit. It’s a lot but I always feel like ”ugh I wore that last time” and would be envious of 20 nice options. Based on limited use I might thin out the khakis/dress pants a bit of duplicates if I needed the space.

But really what he has sounds to me like generous options, not buried in excess, if space isn’t an issue.

His actual need for more formal attire is very limited as the restaurants around here are so casual, and even when we go to the theater, "nicer casual" is about as formal as it gets. Weddings he has a suit, and even wakes/funerals are sports jackets these days...

DH has gray and black and navy trousers. He has one lighter and one heavier weight sports jacket. He has a good navy suit (jacket can be worn separately which has been great for our cruises). He has a couple of formal dress shirts and a couple of button collar shirts which can do double duty as casual. He has some check or plaid casual shirts as well. For summer, he has a couple of golf shirts and short-sleeved button fronts. He also has his "dress jeans" which are very black and he's worn to restaurants and the theater. He has a number of sweaters which he wears over the shirts as a casual option, especially since he's always cold.

Those are what I would consider that he actually wears. Mind you, he has tons more clothing including a tux. He must have 50 ties, at least 3 more suits (I can't tell you how many we've already culled) many dress shirts both long and short sleeved (some so old they're in sherbet colors!), and dress shoes that are going moldy including his wing tips. He won't part with them, so they just sit. In prep for the last wedding we went to, I had him try on all his suits and jackets and we did get rid of a bunch of them as they no longer fit. Though he's obsessive about his weight, with age, he's gotten thicker through the middle and smaller through the shoulder and shorter so they didn't look good any more. I convinced him to let those go any way.

Zalco nailed it. So easy for men. Mine hates shopping. We are still in Florida and he was in desperate need for dress shorts. Finally dragged him to Dillards. We also bought a few nice collared polos, but he needs more.

DH has a gray suit that works for everything suit related. We’ve discovered that Untuckit shirts work for him, so he now has a few of those.

Our lives here and in NY are casual. But, I still want him to look nice when we go somewhere.

Good to overhaul the old stuff now and again.

Oh, I forgot about his million pair of shorts.....well maybe just 20 pair!

Back to the original question. No one needs 19 pair of casual slacks, golf shorts/pants/shirts.

Try on each and every item, toss the ones that are worn or stained or don't fit or look funny.

That should eliminate some things.

Eld, we haven't gotten the Untuckd (sp) shirts yet but I might get him a blue oxford one. He does a few "nice" casual short and long sleeved button shirts that are what he would wear to dinner or a birthday party with dark jeans or khakis

We go to a particular fine dining place, the best food, lovely atmosphere and people go in very casual clothes....always interesting to me...

I've never known a man to accumulate too many clothes on his own. Does this guy do his own shopping and make his own dressing decisions? If not and he's retired, he's old enough to do so himself.

Anne, it's true that many dress very casual, even in fine dining. But, I like DH to look nice! I usually choose his outfit and put it on the bed. We recently bought him a of pair canvas slip shoes that really elevate the look.

Side story: DH and I were on vacation, out for a stroll. Both of us were wearing tee shirts and shorts. We came upon a lovely upscale restaurant and stopped to look at the posted menu. DH smiled at the host at door and said something about how we were dressed. They welcomed us in!!

It took me a bit to get past how nice everyone looked and how underdressed we were. The meal was great as was the service.

Clearly you have never met my husband. :-) He loves to shop, while I do not. Other than the occasional package of undershirts, I've never bought any clothes for him in 36+ years of marriage.

In his case, the accumulation was suits, dress shirts, ties, and good shoes, since that's what he wore to work every day for 40 years. He retired a few years ago, and during the first year of the pandemic we went to work on our closets and did a major culling. He still has more suits, etc. than he needs, but his closet is much emptier now.

If he found himself with an oversupply of suits and what accompanies them at the time of retirement because his daily attire changed, that's something different. I remain surprised to hear of an adult male who's accumulated on his own more clothes than needed.

Or one whose clothing choices are "helped" by a wife or other partner. I know and have known several people with the common blue/green color blindness. A common approach among them seems to be to make purchases (with color help at that point only) such that everything in the closet "goes" with everything else. For dressier dress, every tie goes with every shirt goes with every suit. Ditto for casual clothes. It isn't a big deal to deal with.

It's actually red/green that's common. Blue/yellow is more rare.
