Natural oak or mid tone? Looking for opinions!

My dear hubby is refinishing this table. Should he go with a natural oak color or should he go just a bit darker? Or what about the base in a dark with the top lighter? He’s doing this project with no idea where the table will end up.

Comments (27)mark_rachel, that is what I told my husband! And, Oak & Board, I've been studying this off and on for at least a year. You are one of my favorite commentors. I have learned a lot from you. Both of the samples are solid hardwood not engineered. KD is pleased with the quality of the floor and barely there bevel. Haven't seen a white oak floor yet in Michigan. Well aware of matching existing flooring of which we have none. Need a little more visual interest than the white oak. Considered natural hickory and I think it is too much for me. In my area, everyone is used to red oak. Boring Detroit area suburbs. Comments (38)This is a great post and info, I am glad I came across it! I have Timborana hardwood floors that I've hated for years now. I love the wood grain, but I can't stand the color anymore... yes it's red, and it shows absolutely everything (foot prints, paw prints, hair, etc). I came across this post as I have been looking for a green undertone stain color. I am trying to figure out what to do. Those pieces are the back side of this flooring so it shows the natural color. On the right is the sample done by the flooring guy. This is the color that I really like, not too dark, not too light. This is a sample piece that my flooring guy sanded down and tried 4 different alternatives. I was shocked on how light it turned out. Not sure what the top color is, but I don't like it (too yellow). The second one I think is just the natural finishing coat. The third one has more white mixed with the finishing coat and the bottom one just a little white. I am really debating if I should go with one of those 3 options, there is such a difference in color between boards, I am not sure what it will look like. I am wondering if I should ask him for something a little darker, not sure if something like the picture above could be achieve in any way. Of course Timborana has a lot more wood grain. Also many have said it shows every mark and footprint. i did a test on a sample and it only took 8 rubs to put a hole in an old teeshirt. I did the same in a Surecore sample and no hole....See More

last yearI wish I had pictures for you--we just looked at a bunch of Rubio samples for our white oak island. We're going with Smoky 5%. Just a tiny bit darker than natural, and I think it makes the grain look really pretty. I agree with keeping it all one color vs two-tone. You can buy sample sizes on the Rubio website. I think a ton a people are still buying light/natural oak finishes, but I know darker wood tones are coming back in style too. It's a beautiful table; someone is going to be very lucky!
