Electric Consumption of a Whole House Heat pumps w/mini-splits system

Tom Thacher
last year

I know that my 1500 sq ft house in Springfield, MA used 498 therms of natural gas in our Utica boiler with baseboard hotwater system for the whole heating season last year. That is roughly 50,000,000 btus of heat (actually less due to loss with 80% efficient boiler). I am considering installing a whole house heat pumps w/mini-splits system to provide all my heating and cooling (not to supplement the natural gas boiler). The heat pumps I am considering have a HSPF rating from 10.6 to 12.5. Is it reasonable for me to apply a HSPF = 11 for the whole system and thus estimate that the whole system conservatively at a maximum will require 50,000,000/11000 = 4,545 kWhs or roughly 4,600 kWhs annually to heat the house? I fear that I am missing something which makes this calculation not a valid approximation.
