Pool - Full of water after Shell Shot

We are installing a new pool. The concrete was just shot yesterday. The pool has water at the deep end (the deep end is 6 feet deep). Our contractor said this is normal. They used sump pumps to extract water 15 feet underground for over a week before, during and after the digging phase. The pump is now turned off. We live across the street from a canal and about a half a mile from the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Should I be concerned?

Where is the water coming from? Is there a drain our outlet or something allowing water in... or is the water seeping right on in through the cement? Why does the water look so brown, is there debris or dirt of something getting in there?

A permanent sump will need to be installed to handle the ground water. We do this very often.

It's not good for the structure to have that amount of water behind after a fresh shot. They should have continued to run the pump. Also, constant moisture will have an affect on the plaster's ability to bond properly. It's much like painting on dry wood as opposed to damp wood.

We are currently building a pool on the Hudson River in New York and (2) permanent pumps will be installed to handle the ground water when the tide comes in. Right now (2) temporary pumps are in place.

They pick up water about 18" below the bottom of the pool floor.

I would also recommend an automatic hydrostatic relief plug. It has a spring loaded cap in the event ground water pressure exceeds the pool water pressure. Essentially a fail safe in the event the sump pump fails. It allows an for exchange of water to hopefully prevent a pop up.

We will install a drain cover over the top as well.

I was very happy to see this subject here. I live in So. Cal. (Solvang) and we have enormous water bills due to some questionable handling of the State Water deal that came in.....last month hit $305.......ouch! If we are gone and the house is closed the base is still $75 before use. We have 96 sprinkler heads through 2/3 acre. I am in the process of changing any unneeded sprinkler heads to drip as sprinklers are great for lawns but notorious water wasters elsewhere. What I want to do is tap down into my backwash pipe that heads down to the street. We have a narrow strip of orchard with 15 fruit trees and grass next to the driveway and the backwash is buried through the orchard. Seems like we could tap into the pipe and when running backwash it could be watering the fruit trees instead of going down the street. People use gray water systems (w/out soft water), and I agree that chlorine levels can be higher from the tap than what's in your pool. I did reduce the amt. of backwashing needed by getting a robotic cleaner that filters better than my sand filter and using a cover to greatly reduce pool water evaporation. So unless someone can really attest to backwash water not being useable, I'd say this would be a great idea. Obviously people doing slight saltwater pools etc. should steer clear....and yes, don't shock your pool than backwash immediately afterwards although I think the chlorine level would be safe within a day or two of shocking.

Keep in mind that when vinegar is used as a herbicide, the contentration is fairly high, and you're supposed to use it when the sun is out. Many things that are fine or even good for plants are toxic at high conentrations. I've given a fair amount of vinegar to shaded weeds, and they were fine (they didn't even flinch). I imagine a little calcium acetate on the plant isn't going to hurt it. Fertilizer foliar sprays generally aren't done when the sun is out, and the concentration is very low. So, you're unlikely to kill the plant, unless you use the wrong ratio of fertilizer to water and/or apply it in the sun.

We did not pay for that water to be added to the pool. There was some thought that the project could have finished by winter (hence, no charge for ballast water in the contract) but they were held up by rainy weather in the fall (I also didn't like where the pool was going to be so they had to put in for a permit change with the county) so we are waiting until spring. Should I be worried that the Hydrostatic relief ports opened up after the water was put in or do you think they were never closed off? I honestly don't know how quickly the water leaked out b/c it had a sheet of ice on it until today and I try not to walk out there b/c it is so muddy. So you think it would be fine if they didn't put in any more water? It won't lift? For legal purposes, I would rather it not have water. The crappy orange plastic fence that they put up around it keeps ripping in the wind. My husband bought zip ties to hold it on the posts but it continues to rip. I knew this was the place to get a quick answer. Thanks...megan

Thank you dizzylizzy, Diane and Lisa. Diane they are both Bourbons. MEC is a sport of MME ISAAC PEREIRE and KATHLEEN HARROP is a sport of ZEPHIRINE DROUHIN. I like them both better than the other two. Like most of my Bourbons (except for SDlM) they only have a few scattered blooms after the first flush. I used to think I didn’t want roses that didn’t repeat frequently, but I enjoy them while I’m waiting for the others to begin their show. I do think it’s going to be a good season, everything is very healthy and I have lots of buds, However, we’ve had June/July like weather and all weekend lots of wind, Ive been doing a lot of watering. Lisa, I’m not sure. Seems like I saw KH listed in RU and looked it up on HMF, loved the color, and thought it was charming, that’s why I got it. Some fuller blooms today on MEC

I don't know jack about pools but I know a little about pop-up, and I was worried when I saw the pic that it was going to happen NOW because there's no water in the pool to hold back the water pressure from the ground. But obviously it's leaking somewhere, so maybe that will alleviate the problem. However...your brand new pool leaks. What's that going to cost in water over the next couple of decades? I'd be asking the contractor that. As I said, I don't know anything about pools but I'm pretty sure they are not supposed to leak muddy water.

The water is most likely coming up through the hydrostatic pipe installed when the pool was shot.

The water is muddy as the soil beneath the pool is coming up with the water table.

Pools can still float despite being completely filled with water. Groundwater can be very powerful.
