The shutter color doesn't go well with the house. I'd pick a medium sage green, darker than the washed-out blue you have now. You want a warmer color to go with that lovely, warm brick.

Downspouts and gutters are not features, they are like plumbing: Paint the downspouts to match the read, ditto gutters. Invisible is the look you're aiming for.

@Sigrid, Thank you! Are you saying to match the gutters and downspouts to the brick? Would you do all the trim in the medium sage green? Looking at some options, I like SW Pewter Green or F&B Lichen or Green Smoke. Some of these might be darker than what you were thinking so let me know if you have any favorite colors.

I agree, the faded blue isnt right with your brick. Very cute house, by the way. I would just paint the shutters first, and then get a landscaping plan and put in some landscaping, since that is what the house needs the most. The front yard could also use 2 or 3 smaller flowering type trees. Have a landscaping company draw up a plan, and then you can do the landscaping little by little over time. I would also want either a solid roof, or a pergola over that patio. It would add a lot to the back, and it needs a bit of landscaping back there too.

Oh man. I don't know if I'd do it, but I'd seriously consider a rich raisiny color for shutters/trim to pop against that brick

Yes, to lots of landscaping. So excited for a yard thats nearly a blank slate. I’m seeing serviceberry and redbud up front along with an Arizona cypress Blue Ice. I think that’s why I’d been trending blue but appreciate these ideas!

Looks like some of the brick areas could use a power wash. It is a pretty neutral color, so you have lots of options for the front door. The windows aren't suitable for shutters, but there may be a variation in the brick color behind them. If not, I would remove them and focus all attention on the door. You need a larger light fixtures (1/3 of the front door's height) and big house numbers on the lower retaining wall by the drive. Gutters can be painted to match what they lie against if you can't move them. I would remove the arch inserts in the garage door windows for an update. You will see a huge difference with landscaping. I would seriously consider terracing the slope. Hire a professional to plan out the landscaping and install it over time if budget doesn't allow for a massive project.

Lose the shutters, they don't go with those windows. I would paint the door a different color and don't be afraid to go a little New England with it. I would put some trees to the left of the driveway--evergreens? to balance those amazing trees you have behind the house--what are those??? I would keep the plants low on the right side of the house (flowery plants) and tall on the left. Not sure what color your roof is but if you paint the gutters a shade that is in the roof they will disappear--I wouldn't try to match them with the brick. Also you've got straight lines going through the windows and half moons on the garage, I know you can't fix that anytime soon. I would stay away from dark colors with that brick and those white windows. Keep it light. Looks like the back is going to be a labor of love, but I would start with an outdoor summertime living area to the right to minimize the unbalanced windows. What is that cement thing?

@decoenthusiaste. Thank you for the ideas. Yes, we are power washing the exterior and will remove the shutters to see if the brick behind is discolored. I'd like to leave them off to see what we think after. I think I can remove the arch inserts in the garage door windows (they also need to be cleaned). That was going to be a rainy day project when I can't work in the yard (lots of weeding - ivy and p.i. - in a rear bed). We have since removed the original brick retaining wall and replaced it with two tiers of a shorter wall out of a concrete block material (creating terraces as you suggested). The redesign will bring the walkway closer to the top of the driveway and eliminated the 90 degree angle at the steep stairs where I think house numbers could have been placed. Love the idea of a large, bold light fixture at the front door and more decorative house numbers there. We have found a landscaping company who will come out to provide a design that we can implement over time. Will try to post some progress photos as things in advance but we need the gutters done ASAP (as part of improving drainage away from the house) hence the color questions...

@Julie Julie Seems like most vote against the shutters (yay!). I am ready to remove them and power wash this weekend. Please let me know what going "a little New England" means...I love the sound of it but any specific colors you are thinking? Yes to more trees, including evergreens. I get the idea of using trees to balance the slope on the right. There is one smallish maple over on that side and I can see adding more, but I want to figure out placement of a vegetable garden before. That is the south side and best all day sun. The backyard is heavily shaded by that beautiful tree, a Willow Oak, estimated at about 120 years old (!). In yards behind ours are other oaks. The roots of our oak were 6-8 inches above the ground surface so we added the concrete block knee wall around an existing concrete 'patio' to act as a sort of retaining wall allowing us to add more soil back there to bury the roots (arborist approved) and redirect water. Grass seed was added to help stabilize the surface but with time and money my goal is to add beds around the fence perimeter, around the knee wall and a rain garden to help with water during storm events. The roof is a light gray and I have one 'gray' option from the gutter company. Will try to remove those arches from the garage windows this weekend. Its been on my wish list, too. How about white for the trim, you have white windows, white for the clapboard in the back and a pale front door? You mentioned Boothbay Gray...that would work nicely with the roof. In this instance I would paint the sidelights and the storm door the same color. I think it will make the entry look more important.

As the the garage door, when under the house, as yours is, I think it should work more with the brick. Make it special as it is an important part of having curb appeal. Splurge for wood or a wood look.

@judianna20, thanks. Love your suggestions. I think we are definitely with you on the shutters. I love the color for the front door, too. It looks similar to SW Retreat which we just tested on the front door. Love the wooden garage door. I wonder about getting that look with paint (blending) until we can splurge on replacing something that isn’t actually broken.

Sure you can paint the garage door similar to the brick color...when in doubt go just a bit darker.

This is what I mean for your front door, side lights and storm...obviously not this dark...just an visual.
