Magnetic knife rack in drawer
Comments (9)I was thinking about how I would DIY this. If the knives are going to sit directly on the wood of the drawer they will slide around. Maybe you could take the drawer out and glue down skinny strips of wood or plastic. Space them out how you need them to be according to your knife collection, and leave an area for the cutting board. I'm envisioning something like a long skinny rectangular piece of wood, not too think so that you are not wasting too much space. They will still slide around if there's no liner, but they would be more contained. You could also cut little pieces of liner to put between the dividers and the knives would stay put even better. My parents just have all their knives thrown in a drawer. They're fine with that, but I noticed over time with all the shifting that the knives have gouged knicks and holes in the back of the drawer. Not really visible, but still that would bug me. So maybe place a strip of wood or plastic along that back to keep that from happening....See Moremy knife drawer
Comments (18)Glad to see someone else has a suggestion for large knife collection without awkward blocks. O.T. We had two blocks full of knives--a real space killer in old kitchen. We've put a slit in countertop in new kitchen, a few inches from the wall. Had to plan short drawers below this space. Ours is "working kitchen" concept so I like having these immediately at hand--chopping station is just to the left. I don't have to open a drawer to put them away so I can carry them in both hands from dishwasher. No specific slit for any knife; rule is simply big ones to the left. Serrated knives and a few small knives are elsewhere--at sandwich/toast zone....See MoreHow do you store your knives? Knife drawer suggestions please?
Comments (15)I combined my regular silverware with my good knives in one drawer. This was easy to do as I have IKEA drawers which allow for whatever you want! I bought a Wusthof in drawer knife block which have been thrilled with (so glad to get rid of the one the counter one). I bought it on Amazon. There is also a modular version that is a bit more adjustable. Ditto everything Amberley said. It's like we have the exact same drawer! ;^) Wait--mine is a 30"; what size is yours? :^p...See MoreKnife storage- do in drawer inserts dull knives
Comments (8)What dulls a knife is using it against a hard surface. Always use a cutting board when using a knife, don't put them in the dishwasher and don't let them bang against anything. They should stay sharp for home use with just an occasional use of a steel. If the cutting edge rests against wood or plastic, it should be fine in a drawer. It's not sitting there that dulls it. It's banging on metal or a china plate or something like that (and of course, using it). For my slicing knife, I wrap the blade in a towel and put it in the front of the drawer. There are also knife shields that you can get at the restaurant supply. I have one called edgeguard. You just slip your knife in it, and it protects the edge. (I'm a chef, so keeping sharp knives is important to me.) bk...See MoreLindsey Brady
