Patsy, The sand fleas have driven me out of the garden this morning. They bite! So, I will spend a little time on your question. Above Cady has touched on an important point. When planting against wood siding one must understand that winds will whip branches which in turn rub the siding, leaving scars. I would veto using Pyracantha as its thorns can do a great deal of damage to siding. Ditto bamboos inclucing clumping forms for the same reason and not suitable for those growing conditions. So, your first consideration should be the construction of a strong trellis attached to the house but set out from the siding about 3". Any good carpenter knows how to do this. I do not visualize the 'standard' lattice trellis in this situation made up of small squares. Rather, I would pick up on the horizontal lines of the house by constructing two upright sides between the windows with horizontal cross pieces placed about 15" apart, think ladder style. This would be stained the house color. Height of this ladder trellis will depend on your plant selection. Cady's weeping beech is an excellent choice. Also, the very upright common witch hazel (Hamamelis viginiana) would be easy to secure. The north side location limits plant choices. If they were white cedar and bleached by the sun it would be possible to treat the new shingles to accelerate the bleaching. If they are red cedar and will turn dark that is caused by fungus which grows on any rough surface especially in the shade or where water does not wash over it. I know of no way to accelerate that process. Here in New England people are not normally bothered by patches of new shingles; I guess a few years is not considered much time for shingles that last 40 years or perhaps natural shingles are considered part of a life style rather than a cosmetic choice. The people here indulge in other eccentric behavior as well.

There is a climbing hydrangea next door growing on a chain link fence in full sun. It gets absolutely no attention and no watering other than from Ma Nature! Because of our dry summers, it looks a bit rough right now but is apparently able to tolerate the full sun position quite well. It would look much better if it had been provided with regular deep irrigation through the summer. IME, the parthenocissus species are very tolerant of either sun or shade so could work nicely for you. More sun exposure generally results in better fall color as well. I especially like Parthenocissus henryana or sliver vein creeper, which has a interesting patterning on the foliage and colors up beautifully. It is a Great Plant Picks selection, so highly recommended for PNW gardens.

Cute house. I have a cedar clapboard house as well. I now have white trim but when I moved here, i had one of the Benjamin Moore historical greens on my trim, maybe southport green or something. It looked pretty and matched the green moss that tends to grow on parts of the cedar. Some of the historical blues are pretty too. You can go on Benjamin Moore's color viewer and upload a pic of your house and try out different colors if that helps. I tried to do yours but it needs to be a higher resolution. I love the house as is too so maybe just beef up your landscaping for color and add some window boxes and pots of flowers.
