Have to replace ivy that is eating house - with what?

We have to take out the ivy on the front of the house - as you can see it is a West Coast designed home and has next to no curb appeal and faces north - z 6a Two questions:

1. The ivy is eating the cedar on the front of the house and is very, very healthy. Any suggestions on how to tackle taking it down - other than moving...... LOL...

2. What to replace the ivy with - also would like to take out the cedars.

Thought maybe stained glass hostas with Japanese painted ferns where the cedars are - but they are only 45 cm high - approx - and I'd like something more dramatic -there is only about 2' of ground between the house and the blacktop all across the front.

What about some kind of grass where the ivy is?

Thanks in advance for any help - I'm more the numbers type and less the design/architecture type
