Wall is Out, LIght is In... Redoing a '49 Cape's Kitchen (thx Bue
Comments (35)This is Mr. kris_ma. She asked me to step in to answer some questions: eastbaymom: The vent hood is from Bosch. I think Kris got it on Overstock. The "micro-drawer" is a Microwave Drawer from Sharp that is in our Island. We really like having a microwave that isn't above the stove or taking counter space. The NeverMT is a kit that allows us to hook up the sink soap dispensers to large jugs of soap so that we don't have to refill them. And the hidden storage is an assignment that *I* got based on an idea that Kris picked up off this board (which is why she isn't allowed to frequent here any more :). The 3" trim board between the fridge and the over-fridge cabinet is installed on a piano hinge, so that it swings backwards to store large flat trays, placemats, etc. on top of the fridge without them being seen. sandbox5: Here's the story of the wired sound: Kris found some Cambridge Soundworks Ambience 80 speakers, which install in the ceiling. We ordered four of them (2 in the kitchen and 2 in the living room) and got permission from our contractor to run some speaker wire while the ceiling was torn off, and I ran wiring from where we wanted to speakers installed over to the location of our pantry, where we planned to install the sound equipment. We also had the electrician install an electrical outlet inside the cabinet. After the kitchen was finished, we cut holes in the ceiling to install and wire up the speakers. Inside the pantry, we ran the other end of the speaker wires into an electrical box with speaker terminals. For sound equipment, we got an Airport Express, which has a mode that allows it to stream music from iTunes. The hardest part was finding an amplifier that would fit inside the pantry and not generate too much heat. We ended up buying two small PylePCA3 amplitiers - one each for the kitchen and living room speakers. We put these in the pantry, along with the Airport Express and connected the audio out jack on the airport into the amplifiers (we had to use an RCA jack splitter to connect to both amps). We keep the amplifiers on, and can stream music from our laptops anywhere in the house. We also use a third party software program called Airfoil (for Macs only) that allows us to stream music from *any* application, not just iTunes. I hope that helps....See MoreSteel vs. Fiberglass Doors
Comments (55)Our house was built in 2001. We have a double front door and garage entry door, both fiberglass by Thermatru. The front door with full lite glass has had serious warping. The top and bottom both twist in. This is in a covered area facing East. The garage entry is fine, but the seal went out in the 1/2 glass. I sent claim to thermatru direct. Via email I was able to get replacement. But not what I wanted. They were willing to send me one new door slab and 3 new pieces of glass since our style was discontinued. That would have been a nightmare trying to get the new one to match both inside and outside with paint and stain. We compromised with 2 new front slabs and 1 new glass. They sent it immediately. We are just getting around to replacing with spring weather. I’m exasperated and haven’t even started. Seeing what they sent, it is going to be a huge hassle to change out the glass AND strip and repaint the surrounds, etc that didn’t get replaced. Now looking at steel doors from Menards, Mastercraft. I see the good and bad reviews, but honestly I’d be happy if that lasted 2/3 the time these did as these fiberglass doors are crap. I want durable fade free doors. I did buy a Home Depot door for garage to house, with glass, not fire rated, my concern in that. Our installer said it was the easiest door he’s ever put in and to this day it opens and closes perfectly. On at least its 5th year. Didn’t spend more than $500 for it....See MoreAm I overthinking this? Replacement of 90s front door
Comments (9)Thanks for the suggestions and comments. RedRyder, that's a good thought about the color. So far I've only been considering factory finishes, but I'm sure they would do a custom color for us. Thanks, houssaon. Good idea about enlarging the gutters. I'll have to put that on the list as we get heavy rains fairly frequently. We do get ice, but it doesn't last long, and hardly any snow. Wish we got more! I -definitely- don't want to highlight or pull forward the garage door, littlebug. We've been talking about the front door in that context, so we're on the same page there. Everything in front of the front door is going to get removed soon, to be replaced by new steps, etc. The first picture in the thread is more or less how it looks now. There's no shrubbery. It's just dark because it's shady there in the afternoon. That's pretty much all brick with a few short plants in the brick planter "box" that will be removed....See MoreSchmidt's Smooth Yellow - "No thorns on me!"
Comments (24)Jeri....it's hard for me to even think about such a thing. You know how there is the National Register of Historic Places for buildings? There should be something similar for gardens. Our plants, trees, and gardens are just as much a part of our heritage as buildings! The city's attitude toward the roses in the cemetery reminds me of my feelings about some of my neighbours :) I've told this story before, but....I live on a designated scenic walking road and my rose garden is huge (80x80 with 150 roses) and right on the street. Sometimes I sit in my upstairs window and watch people as they walk by. It's unbelievable to me the number of people who walk right by 150 roses in full bloom and don't even turn their heads! I want to open my window and scream out "Philistine!!". I was shocked when I went to the cemetery garden that it was so empty, yet when I visited the municipal rose garden nearby, it was packed with people. It's really too bad people don't appreciate roses in their natural shapes and sizes. Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir here :)...See Morekimdrummond
