New garage doors/ future exterior update to brick ranch
Comments (6)your house is really cute, not somewhere I would put fancy scrolly carriage lights. I also really like the brick as is. Whatever you do, just don't paint it (the brick), it is a nightmare once it starts peeling. Regarding the doors, are they wood or vinyl? they look wood from here, which is better than 90% of the new doors people put on, because they are usually vinyl and have those tell-tale tiny windows. If your doors work and are wood, trust me they are more valuable than new vinyl doors. My new wood garage doors cost a lot of money that I was more than willing to spend because I hate vinyl. So, if they work, paint them! Fix and care for them as though they will cost 5-10k to replace because anything cheaper will be a downgrade. Color wise...can you paint the vinyl trim? Greens and cream look great with brick houses :)...See MoreLooking for help updating exterior
Comments (9)One paint scheme that results in a ho-hum, drab appearance is when body color and trim are the same. Many government managed wood buildings -- like Army barracks would be painted like this because they buy the paint in million-gallon cans. Here, it is all white -- with the only contrasting feature being the shutters. (Yes, it will look even plainer if you remove the shutters! There is a growing group of shutter purists that advocate for only authentic style shutters that look literally functional. I reject this notion and accept that shutters, even if too narrow to be actually functional, still serve as trim, which adds some interest. You can pick if you want to be a purist, or if you think that some visual interest detail is better than no visual interest detail.) If you were to paint the house a medium tone and keep the trim white, you would automatically have a more interesting looking house.(Search Google images for "houses with white trim" and you'll see how the contrasting trim sharpens the appearance. Inadvertently, you'll see all manner of medium body tones, some of which may appeal to you.) Regarding the front yard (the panoramic helps) it looks like you'd be best off to create large islands in which the trees are grouped and in which groundcover is grown. Reserve grass only for the areas which get sufficient light that grass can be grown well. It would be good to add your location & zone on your profile page, so people would have an idea of things that would work for your location. (The pan is taken from way off center. If you want visual feedback, you'd need to provide one taken from where the camera is centered with the view.) The foundation planting would require a complete different set of photographic information -- a pan where the camera is about 25' - 30' from straight out the front door....See MoreExterior Lights Over Basement Garage -- 3 lights or 2?

Comments (18)@decoenthusiaste, woould you remove shutters from the windows on the porch only? On the walls to either side of front walk are windows with shutters, and also two on the front at left (one covered by tree). The window at right is boxed out with no shutters (covered partially by purple tree in bottom pic below). 1. Also we ruled out green--we think it's just TOO MUCH green and aren't into it enough to make a statement. 2. We may eventually change out the stone, which is fake stone and we don't love it, so while I do like taking the lighter buff tone and using that, please know we aren't married to the stone or especially trying to highlight it. We also need to re-do the front walk in the near future (next spring??)....See More- 2 years ago
