First things first: do you like the COLOUR of the wood that is CURRENTLY there? If you do, then go ahead and take a piece of it shopping. #2. Do you like the colour of the COUNTER TOPS in the kitchen? If so, then go ahead and find a stone-look tile (I like vein cut travertine-look porcelain...they are gorgeous AND indestructible AND they look great with wood AND you can get them in any colour you want). Where do you live? What climate? You can go with solid hardwood that is site finished or you can work with solid that is factory finished or you you might have to work with engineered hardwood (because of where you live and your visual preference). LOCATION and HOUSE HVAC determine whether or not you *must work with engineered (there are ways around it but the SAFEST option would be engineered).
